Neil Roberts graduated with a Masters degree from Brigham Young University in 1969. During his playing days at BYU (1965-1967) he was a three-year letterman and was named to the Look Magazine All-American team in 1967. He started his coaching career at Burley High School in Idaho and then moved on to coach at Payson High School for one year each. He then was named head coach at Skyline High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. During his tenure at Skyline, he won two state championships and was named to the 1977 McDonald’s All-American game coaching staff.
 
After his days as a high school coach, he was named the head coach at Dixie College in 1978. He remained at Dixie College until 1985. During his tenure his teams played in six regional championships games, winning three of them. The Rebels made three appearances at the NJCAA National Championships and his teams finished third, sixth, and reached the pinnacle by winning the NJCAA Championship in 1985. It was the first national championship of any kind for Dixie College. That year he was named as the NJCAA National Coach of the Year award. During his time as coach of the Rebels, he coached several successful players including Danny Tarkanian, Craig Hammer, Averian Parrish, Steve Schreiner and Jon Judkins.
 
After his days at Dixie College, he coached at Southern Utah University from 1988-1994.
