Caroline Heaton Durrant was born December 28, 1979, in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, to Raymond and Allida Heaton. With nine siblings, she had a full house but always found time for the sports that she loved.

Caroline began her sports career in high school at Valley High School in Orderville, Utah, where she was a four-year starter, leading the team to an 88-8 overall record while winning back-to-back state basketball titles in 1997 and 1998. Caroline was named as the state 1A MVP in those title years, averaging 19.8 points and over 10 rebounds per game. She did all this while juggling schoolwork, and earned the title of Distinguished Academic All-American. Caroline earned multiple awards and was Athlete of the Year for the year 1999-2000. Once again, she excelled in academics as well as sports, accumulating a 3.9 GPA. When she graduated, she held four statistical records: 62% single-season field goal percentage, career field goal percentage of 56%, free throw season percentage of 81% and she was the career rebounding record holder with 457.

After attending Dixie, Caroline attended Southern Utah University, and was named the SUU Female Athlete of the Year and team MVP in 2001-2002. While again earning Academic All-American, she also had a single game career high of 20 rebounds.
