As Dixie College’s basketball coach in the 1960 and 1970’s, Doug Allred has two things that he is especially proud of. “I took the first team from Dixie College to nationals,” Allred recalled recently. Nationals of course, was the NJCAA tournament in the Hutchinson, Kansas. Allred took his teams there twice during a 15-year career. Allred’s teams won the NJCAA region One championship twice and won the Intermountain Collegiate Athletic Conference championship “three or four years” during his tenure. At that time the ICAC included Dixie, Ricks, Snow Eastern Utah (then Carbon College) as well as what is now Boise State (Idaho) and Mesa State (Colorado).
One of those ICAC championships came when Allred was 28 years old. Another accomplishment, Allred expressed pride in, was “I never had a kid declared ineligible for GPA.”
Originally from Ephraim, Utah, Allred graduated from Snow High School and Snow College. He then moved on to Colorado State University when he played basketball and baseball. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education there. He later earned a master’s degree in physical education and sociology from Utah State University.
Delta High School was the first stop during Allred’s coaching career. After six years with the Rabbits he took over the basketball team at Dixie College in the 1962-1963 school year. He spent 15 years as head coach and spent the last year as both coach and athletic director. He then spent a total of 18 years as athletic director.
“Dixie College was unusually good to me,” Allred said. “It provided me with very good experiences. I have an awfully lot of fond memories. We got great support from the city of St. George and the surrounding community.”
