Utah Tech returns to action early next week when the Trailblazers head to the desert to play in the Minnesota-hosted Bell Bank "Pay It Forward" Collegiate.
The two-day, 54-hole event will take place this Monday and Tuesday at the par-72, 6,373-yard Wigwam Resort Blue Course in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
The 14-team field includes the Trailblazers and host Golden Gophers, along with UC Irvine, Creighton, Florida Gulf Coast, Grand Canyon, Middle Tennessee State, Montana State, North Dakota, North Dakota State, Omaha, St. Thomas, South Florida, and Western Michigan.
The five player lineup for the Trailblazers will feature senior
Jane Olson, juniors
Mia Cesarek and
Samantha Phelan, sophomore
Maria Purroy Galan, and redshirt freshman
Gabrielle Roznicki.
HEAD COACH LINDSEY ORTH: Lindsey Orth (Utah Tech, 2007) is in her 10th season as head coach of the Trailblazer women's golf program.
Last season, Coach Orth finished its fifth season of NCAA Division I play with four top-5 showings in nine team events, highlighted by a t-second place finish at the Utah Valley Wigwam Preview in February (2/2-4/25), and a seventh-place showing at the 2025 WAC Championships.
Prior to her arrival at Utah Tech, she served as assistant golf professional at the Sand Hollow Golf Resort, and as an LPGA assistant teaching professional for the City of St. George. Orth also spent two seasons on the coaching staff of the Hurricane High School girl's golf program, including a one-year stint as the Tigers' head coach in the 2010-11 season.
Coach Orth, who is an apprentice member of the LPGA T&CP, played collegiately at the University of Central Arkansas, where she helped lead the Bears to six-consecutive team tournament wins and a Gulf South Conference championship.
LAST TIME OUT: Utah Tech finished in the middle of the pack in fifth place at the Southern Utah Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational, which was played this past March 6-8, at Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George.
The Blazers' fifth place result is the team's third top-five showing in seven team events this season.
After opening with a 19-over 307 to stand in fifth place, Utah Tech improved by five shots in round two with a 14-over 302, but remained in fifth on the team leaderboard. The Trailblazers briefly moved up to fourth during their final loop, but wound up settling for fifth place after posting a 10-over 298.
Phelan played three days of steady golf en route to her best individual finish of the season in solo-fifth place at plus-1 217. Phelan, who penciled in three birdies in each of her three rounds, opened with a 1-over 73, which she followed with consecutive even-par 72s.
Purroy Galan opened her tournament with a 3-over 75, and after a 4-over 76 in round two, came back with two birdies and 12 pars on her way to a final round 2-over 74, to tie three others for 16
th at plus-nine 225. Purroy Galan recorded two birdies on each of her three scorecards on the weekend.
Meanwhile Cesarek, who rolled in five total birdies over her three rounds, fired back-to-back 76s, followed by a final round 5-over 77 to tie for 21
st at plus-13 229.
Olson (83-78-76; two birdies) moved up three spots on the final day to finish in solo 36
th-place at plus-21 237, while senior
Jenna Anderson (85-79-76; five birdies) returned to action for the first time this spring and finished in a two-way tie for 44
th at plus-24 240.
Three more Trailblazers played as individuals, including Roznicki, who fired Utah Tech's lowest round of the event with a collegiate career-low 69 during the second round. Roznicki (77-69-76) rolled in six of her team-high 11 total birdies during that second loop, which helped propel her to her best collegiate finish with a solo 12
th-place score of plus-6 222.
Redshirt junior
Samira Salinas (plus-13 229) rebounded from an opening 7-over 79 with consecutive 75s, and finished with six total birdies on the weekend, to tie her with Cesarek for 21
st place. In addition, freshman
Coryn Tardiff (87-87-81-255; +39) tallied four birdies as she finished in solo 58
th place.
TRAILBLAZERS AT A GLANCE: Through seven events this season, Purroy Galan leads the team in stroke average at 74.89 through 19 rounds with a team-best six par or better rounds and one top-10.
Phelan is second at 75.15 with five par or better rounds and a team-high three top-10s, while Cesarek is third at 75.35 with four par or better rounds.
Roznicki follows in fifth at 77.50 with a pair of par or better rounds, and Olson is sixth at 77.53 through 17 competitive loops.
