Women’s Tennis opens fall schedule in Colorado

Trailblazers play two matches in two days in Grand Junction

The Dixie State women's tennis teams opens its fall schedule this weekend with a trip to Grand Junction, Colorado, for the annual Colorado Mesa Maverick Duals.

The Trailblazers were originally scheduled to play three matches in three days, but inclement weather in the Grand Junction area forced two teams to abandon their plans to play in the event. Dixie State will now play two matches in two days, opening the trip with a 1 p.m. match against Colorado Mesa on Friday, before closing the trip with a 1 p.m. tilt against Colorado College on Saturday.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME: The state of Colorado has become a home away from home for Dixie State over the last two seasons, as the Trailblazers have recorded a 9-2 record in matches played in Colorado since 2016. Additionally, DSU has logged a 7-1 mark at the CMU Maverick Duals over the past two seasons.

2018-19 ROSTER: Dixie State returns four players from the 2017-18 squad, including senior Yolena Carlon (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista), junior Kyra Harames (Spokane, Wash./Central Valley), and sophomores Taylor Brown (Lubbock, Texas/Frenship ) and Hattie Erekson (St. George, Utah/Pine View).

Carlon logged a team-best 10-4 record in singles play during the 2017-18 season and turned in a 7-10 mark in doubles play. Harames finished the season with a 12-6 record in singles play, while recording a 10-9 mark in doubles play. Brown went 0-2 in singles play and 0-1 in doubles play, while Erekson finished at 1-3 in singles play and 0-3 in doubles play.

Five new players join the team for the 2018-19 season, including sophomores Polly Evans (Safford, Ariz./Safford) and Megan Lynch (Albuquerque, N.M./New Mexico Military Institute), and freshmen Isabel Heras (Saipan/Marianas), Juliana Honczaruk (Corrientes, Argentina), and Elly Lloyd (Holladay, Utah/Olympus). Evans joins the team after playing one season at Eastern Arizona, while Lynch joins the Trailblazers after one season at New Mexico Military Institute. Heras prepped at Marianas High School in Saipan, Honczaruk prepped at Escuela Integral Artistica I-33 in Argentina, and Lloyd prepped at Olympus High School in Holladay, Utah.

COACHING STAFF: Eric Pelton begins his 13th season as the DSU women's tennis head coach. Pelton has been with the program since the sport was added for the 2006-07 season. Pelton is joined again by two assistants, Jordan Lyden (2nd Season) and Steve Bui (3rd Season).

UP NEXT: Dixie State will resume the 2018-19 season in February 2019.
