Trailblazer Tennis Posts Record Showing in ITA Mountain Regionals This Week

(Provo, UT – Oct 18, 2026) – Utah Tech women's tennis has a record-setting week in northern Utah at the ITA Mountain Regionals this week.

Day 1
Freshman Sophie Dowdell picked up a nice win in straight sets in her opening singles qualifying match against Weber State. Sophie won the second set in the tiebreak, 7-4 for the match win.

Sophie then dropped her second set in a tough match against Utah State, but was selected to advance to the main draw as the "lucky loser".

Ana Gutierrez Sampere dropped her qualifying singles match in a hard-fought battle against Utah State, which saw set one go to a tiebreak and set two reach ten games. Maya Inouye also dropped her qualifying singles match against New Mexico State.

Nutsa Tsintsadze played potentially the match of the day in her first qualifying singles match against Colorado State. The first two sets were split, and the tiebreaking set went a total of 18 points, which saw Nutsa fall just short.

Day 2
The main draw for doubles play began on Wednesday, and Utah Tech came to play as all three duos advanced to the round of 32.

Maya Inouye and Adriana Zurita Berdecio teamed up to defeat Boise State 8-5 to advance to the next round. They came back from being down 4-1 and won 6 straight games to take a 7-4 lead, before serving it out for the win.

Nutsa and Sophie paired up and went back and forth with Nevada before pulling away for an 8-4 victory.

Senior doubles team Ana Gutierrez Sampere and Mariana Zurita Berdecio were able to blow past New Mexico State, just dropping one game, 8-1.

In singles play, Marina kept the momentum from doubles play going with a come-from-behind win over Air Force. She dropped the first set 6-2 but then turned it around in the second set, improving her shot selection and being more aggressive with her backhand to win the second set 6-4. Mariana then continued her strong play attacking her opponents backhand to close out a big win in the third set, 7-5.

Both Ana and Nutsa were able to pick up singles wins in straight sets over Weber State and Idaho in extra singles matches.

Day 3
Maya and Adriana picked up right where they left off the day before, picking up an 8-6 win over Pac-12 member, Colorado State. The pair advanced to the round of 16 to face BYU, where they were up 7-6 and just a few points away from making the quarterfinals, but ultimately fell in the tiebreaking set.

The two other duos dropped hard-fought matches, and were knocked out in the round of 32.

Mariana faced a tough opponent in the round of 32 in her main draw singles match, falling in straight sets to Boise State.

The Trailblazers picked up three more extra singles match wins, as Maya, Nutsa, and Adriana took care of three separate Big Sky representatives.

Day 4
Utah Tech was able to pick up two extra doubles match victories and one extra singles match win to close out the ITA Mountain Regionals, and the Trailblazers' Fall Schedule.

Coach Pelton on his team's performance over the week: "This was an incredible week of tennis for Utah Tech, finding more wins and success at this regional tournament than any previous year! We are competing and winning against many of the top players in the region and the nation! So impressed with the hard work these girls continue to put in, they are accomplishing great things and it is exciting to be a part of what they are doing! Elevating the program to new heights!"
