Ana and Mariana Reach Doubles Semifinals, Mariana Reaches Singles Quarterfinals in Big Sky Individual Championships This Weekend

(Ogden, UT – Oct 3, 2026) – Utah Tech women's tennis has a successful showing at the Big Sky Individual Championships this weekend in Ogden.

Mariana Zurita Berdecio entered the singles draw as the 8th seed and had a bye out of the round of 32. Maya Inouye was awarded the 28th seed, and also had a bye out of the round of 32.

In the doubles draw, Zurita Berdecio and Ana Gutierrez Sampere were paired together and drew the 8th seed that gave them a bye to the quarterfinal round. 

Day 1
Ana and Mariana defeated Idaho's duo to advance to the semifinal round after an 8-6 win on Friday. The senior pair led wire to wire, closing it out in the final game to advance to face the 1st seed from NAU on Saturday.

After helping secure the doubles win, Mariana continued her strong play with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 straight set victory in singles play. Zurita Berdecio advanced to the quarterfinal to face the 1st seed, also from Northern Arizona. 

 Maya Inouye fought hard in her singles match, but ultimately fell in straight sets. 

Day 2
Ana and Mariana held their own against the top-seeded doubles pair from NAU, but fell short 8-3. They had some opportunities on some deuce points but could not convert. 

Mariana then competed hard again against the 1st seed from Northern Arizona, but dropped the match in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

Maya Inouye had a nice day, winning her first consolation match over Montana in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Maya then faced Portland State, competing in a marathon match that went to a tiebreaking set. She fell just short after a back and forth battle, 13-11. 

Coach Pelton on his team's performance this weekend: "It was a great weekend! Not just competing but showing their presence at the top of the Big Sky Conference! So proud and impressed with their efforts and accomplishments!"

UP NEXT
Utah Tech will head to Provo to compete in the ITA Mountain Regionals. The tournament will begin Oct 13 and go through Oct 17.
