Just a few days removed from the annual band competition and the sounds of flutes, oboes, and clarinets gone; but there was plenty of chirping going on at Hurst Field Wednesday night. Red took game two to knot the Series at one game apiece. The Deciding game three will be Thursday at 4:37pm and both starting pitchers are still TBD.
Game two looked like a de ja vu of game one early, with Red jumping out to an early lead, but tonight they were able to hang on. In the top of the 2
nd inning, Red six hitter
Brandon Wyland scratched out a walk, then stole second base and advanced to 3B on an error. Freshman
McGwire Madsen came through with an RBI groundout to put Red on the board first once again. Navy answered right back scoring a run on three singles in the bottom of the frame. Navy's run came on a two out infield single by
Gavin Glasgow. Red 2B McDaniel ranged to keep the ball from tricking into the outfield, but an aggressive move by Coach Ipson paid off. Ipson rolled
Ty Johnsen from second and when McDaniel threw behind the runner, a Cardinal sin, Johnsen cruised home.
Red punched right back in the third inning scoring another run on an RBI single by
Gavin Long. While Navy struggled to get anything going against the Red pitchers, Red plated two more runs in the third on a Soto Jr. homer. Red punched back again in the 9
th and plated two more "Jug Runs" off of two doubles from Long and
Andrew Pyle.
Brock Roundy picked up the win for Red, logging 5 innings, scattering 5 hits, and punching out 6 Navy hitters. Jake Schulz of Red, called Roundy "small, but mighty".
Brandon Wyland did the rest, going 3 1/3 and allowing just one earned run while striking out 3.
Braden Thelander came in to finish the game by inducing a groundout off the bat of
Finnegan Stewart.
We will see if Red can stay hot to win back-to back games or if Navy bounces back. There have been some ominous signs out there about who will win each day and we shall see if they stay true to form. "Tomorrow will definitely come down to who takes care of the ball the best. The team making the least mistakes on the mound and on defense will be crowned Thursday." – Commissioner Pfatenhauer
