Navy took game 1 of the 2025 World Series by a score of 10-6 and are in a tremendous spot going into tomorrow. Game two begins at 4:37pm MST on Wednesday, it will be a nine-inning game and will feature starting pitchers
Brock Roundy (SR, Washington, UT) for Red and
Dakoda West (SR, Orem, UT) for Navy.
In the 1st inning of game one, you could sense both teams trying to settle in and shake off the nerves. Starters
Brandon Kosel and
Ryan Martinez both faced the minimum through the 1
st inning, and it appeared that we were in for a pitcher's duel. That all changed in the bottom of the 2nd, when Red BANGED back-to-back homers off the bats of
Cooper Smith and
Andrew Pyle. Smith got ahead in the count and sat on a FB which he deposited in the right field rocks. Then, five pitches later, Pyle crushed a fastball opposite field for a homer. Martinez on the other hand pitched ahead in the count and even when a runner did reach, he was bailed out by multiple double play balls.
After scattering five singles and managing just one run, the Navy offense got off the schneid in the 5
th scoring two runs, highlighted by a pair of singles, a well-executed hit and run, and a sac fly. At that point, Red was still clinging to a 6-3 lead, but they were held hitless for five innings and their bullpen could not hold the lead. Navy struck for three in the 7
th, 2 in the 8
th, and 2 "JUG RUNS" in the 9
th to put Red out of their misery. Four walks, three errors, two wild pitches, and a passed ball were to blame for this epic late-game melt down.
Cooper Smith,
Andrew Pyle, and
Brandon Wyland each had multiple hit games for Red, who as a team scratched out 10 hits but fanned 10 times as well. Navy had four batters with multiple hit games, including
Finnegan Stewart and
Gavin Glasgow with two each,
Miller Durham with Three, and
Hudson Manwaring leading the way with four hits, an RBI, and two runs scored. Navy managed 10 runs with no extra base-hits, while Red crushed three doubles and four homers, but it wasn't enough, "I guess pitching defense truly is more important that hitting," a fan was overheard saying in the parking lot.
With Navy leading the Series 1-0, we will see what kind of magic Red has for game two. Each set of Co-Captains believes their squads are in a good position. When asked about game one, Red Co-Captain
Ryan Martinez stated, "…we came out hot…I think we got too comfortable". "Jobs not done…" said Navy Co-Captain Johnsen. Wednesday should be a barn burner. BUCKLE UP!!!
