Utah Tech mounted a pair of late rallies, but could not overtake UT Arlington as the Mavericks handed the Trailblazers an 11-9 loss in the series finale on Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Â
The Trailblazers (8-23/3-9 WAC) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in their first swings thanks to some timely hitting and aggressive base running.
Ethan He plated the game's first run after he reached on a one-out walk, stole second, and scampered home on a
Parker Schmidt single.
Â
Schmidt then followed suit as he swiped second and came around to score on a
Tyson Fisher opposite field base hit.
Â
UT Arlington would clap back with four runs in the home second inning, which included three-straight two out hits that chased Blazer starter
Carson Angeroth (ND), and turned a two-run deficit into a two-run lead.
Â
Utah Tech answered the Maverick rally with four runs of its own in the fourth to jump back on top at 6-4. After
Karson Irvin reached on a lead off walk,
Shane Taylor laced a single to center, where the bounding ball was misplayed by the UTA outfielder. The error allowed Irvin score all the way from first, while Taylor raced to third.Â
Â
He then stepped up and drilled a 1-0 Caden Noah offering over the left field wall to drive in Taylor and make it a 5-4 game. Schmidt followed that homer with one of his own five pitches later as he pulled a 3-1 Noah pitch well over the right field wall.
Â
However that lead would again be short lived as the Mavericks scored five unanswered runs, four of which came in the fifth inning, to regain the advantage at 9-6 after five complete.Â
Â
The see-saw battle continued in sixth, this time it was Utah Tech responding with a crooked number as the Blazers put three more runs on the scoreboard to knot the score at 9-9.Â
Â
Hank Dodson cashed in a Schmidt lead-off single with his first homer of the year with two outs in the stanza. Then after
Zach Thomas walked to extend the inning,
Garrett Cutting doubled home the Blazer baserunner to pull Utah Tech even.Â
Â
Unfortunately for the Trailblazers, that hit would be their final one of the day as Utah Tech would strand one baserunner in the seventh and two more in the eighth, but could not capitalize on the scoring chances.
Â
Meanwhile UTA (17-16/7-5 WAC) pushed across single runs in those two frames and held on from there to complete the series sweep.Â
Â
Schmidt finished with three hits and three runs scored to go with his home run, while He collected two safeties, as Utah Tech tallied 10 hits on the afternoon.Â
Â
Utah Tech wraps up its seven-game road swing this Tuesday night with a trip up north to Provo for a mid-week game at in-state rival BYU. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
