Utah Tech dropped the middle two games of its four game weekend series at No. 13 Oklahoma State, 10-4 and 9-3, on Saturday at O'Brate Stadium.
Â
In game one, the Trailblazers (5-11) drew first blood in the third inning when
Chase Rodriguez singled home
Bryker Hurdsman, who was plunked to lead off the frame.Â
Â
Oklahoma State (13-3) quickly answered in the home third with three runs, which were set up by four-straight Cowboy hits to lead off the frame, including three doubles. OSU added on two more runs in the fourth before erupting for five runs in the sixth to extend to a commanding 10-1 after six complete.
Â
Utah Tech clawed back with three runs in the seventh, when after a one-out Hurdsman single and a
Shane Taylor walk,
Parker Schmidt tripled to left field to chase home both base runners. Schmidt then scampered home one pitch later on a Rodriguez flyout to trim the deficit to 10-4.
Â
The Trailblazers would threaten again in the eighth, loading the bases with two outs, but the Cowboys would escape the jam and went on to retire Utah Tech in order in the ninth to end the game.Â
Â
Rodriguez led the Blazers with two hits to go with his two RBI as Utah Tech finished with seven hits in the game. Junior
Ryan Hardman (L, 0-4) struck out five in 3.2 innings, but was tagged for five runs and seven hits in taking the loss.
Â
Trailing 2-0 after three innings in the nightcap, Utah Tech would plate single runs in the fourth and fifth frames to pull even at 2-2.
Sean Keating got the Blazers on the board with his fourth home run of the season, a one-out shot to right that two-hopped out of O'Brate Stadium.
Â
Hurdsman would tie the game one inning later when he chased home
Blake Borgogno, who had singled to open the inning and later stole second base.
Â
However it was all Cowboys from then on out as OSU plated seven unanswered runs over the next three innings to extend to a 9-2 advantage.Â
Â
Keating drew the Blazers a run closer with a double in the eighth, but that would be as close as Utah Tech would get as OSU rode home with the Saturday sweep.Â
Â
Hurdsman led the Trailblazer offense with three hits out of the lead off spot, while Keating finished with two extra-base hits, as Utah Tech rapped out seven hits in game two. Senior
Jake Dahle (L, 0-3) worked five innings, scattering eight hits and three earned runs (five total) with four strikeouts.Â
Â
Utah Tech will look to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. (CT).Â
