Utah Tech could not protect an early lead as the Trailblazers dropped the final game of their four-game series at No. 13 Oklahoma State, 9-4, on Sunday afternoon at O'Brate Stadium. UT lost all four games in the set to fall to 5-12 overall.
UT jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead with two runs in both the first and third innings. The Trailblazers strung together three one-out hits in the first, which led to their first run scoring on a
Tyson Fisher fielder's choice.
Parker Schmidt would make to a 2-0 game when he swiped home on the back end of a double steal.
The Blazers padded their lead in the third when
Shane Taylor chased home
Bryker Hurdsman, who walked a stole second to open the frame. Taylor was later bunted over to second and came around to score on a two-out Fisher base hit.
OSU (14-3) answered in the home third with a Noah Turley lead-off home run and a two-run Aidan Meola double to pare the Blazer lead down to 4-3. The Cowboys then jumped ahead 5-4 in the fifth thanks to RBI hits from Meola and Colin Brueggemann.
Oklahoma State would plate three more runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to salt away the game, and the series.
Taylor led the Trailblazer offense with two hits and an RBI as Utah Tech finished with eight safeties on the day.
Sophomore southpaw
Carsten Herman (L, 2-1) pitched into the fifth and got off to a good start, striking out the side in the second and finished with a career-high six punch outs. However the Cowboys managed to solve him in the third and fifth frames to saddle him with his first loss of the year.
Utah Tech will close out its first road trip of the 2023 season on Tuesday night with a midweek match-up at Arizona State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. (PT) at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
