Tennis set to open 2023 season versus Utah

Utah Tech women's tennis will open its 2023 campaign with a pair of matches versus Utah on January 20th.

The doubleheader will start on the Trailblazer tennis courts at 10 a.m., with match two beginning around roughly 2 p.m.

The Trailblazers are coming off a 2-17 season in 2022 that they look to build upon.

This will be Utah Tech's third season competing in the Western Athletic Conference with conference play scheduled to start on March 17 at New Mexico State. The Trailblazers also face a number of competitive Division I opponents in Utah, Weber State, Utah State, UNLV and Idaho and Idaho State.

Utah Tech is returning six athletes from the 2022 season. The returning athletes are highlighted by Rachel Mellor who played to a team-high 9-7 record in the 2022 season. Additionally returning are Ya-Chi Hsu, Angelina Amelkina, Alysha Damron, Jane Dorny, and Cami Oyama.

The Trailblazers have added four freshmen to round out the roster. Coming in is Cirkeline Lundberg, Raquel Roshak, Adithi Venkatakrishnan, and Annemiek Sterk.

The returners had progressive 2022 seasons. Mellor went 3-1 in WAC singles play and 5-13 in doubles play overall. Hsu returns after having a 2-15 record in singles play at the No. 2 spot, as well as a 5-14 record in doubles play, tied for the team high. The team is rounded out with a lot of new players with strong careers coming into the Trailblazers program.

Eric Pelton begins his 17th season as the Utah Tech women's tennis head coach. Pelton has been with the program since the sport was added for the 2006-07 season. Pelton is joined again by his assistant, Lacey Hancock, who is in her second season as an assistant coach.
