Trailblazers travel north for meets at Weber State and Utah

Dixie State women's track and field will travel to northern Utah for the second consecutive week to compete in both the Weber State Spring Classic in Ogden on Friday and the Utah Spring Classic in Salt Lake City on Saturday.
 
The Trailblazers will compete in nine events (five running, four field) at the Weber State Spring Classic, followed by seven events (five running, two field) at the Utah Spring Classic.
 
DSU AT THE WEBER STATE/UTAH SPRING CLASSIC: Since its first season of competition in 2017, DSU track and field has competed at the Weber State and Utah Spring Classic meets each year, except for the 2020 meet that was canceled due to COVID-19. The Trailblazers have enjoyed success in Ogden and Salt Lake City, averaging three school records per appearance at the meets.
 
TRAILBLAZER EVENTS/COMPETITORS: Dixie State will open the weekend with nine events at the Weber State Spring Classic in Ogden on Friday, beginning with its four field events.
 
Sophia Imola will officially open the meet for DSU in the hammer throw and will later participate in the discus. Paige Davis is scheduled to compete in the long jump, while Morgan Callens will wrap up the day's field events in the high jump.
 
Three Trailblazers will kick off the team's running events as Gabby Royle, Amy White, and Kinley Spaulding compete in the 3000m steeplechase, followed by DSU's team in the 4x100.  
 
Dixie State will field five runners in the 1500m, including Madison Flippence, Grace McLaughlin, Shakayla Morgan, Jaylee Sorenson, and Kirstin Williams. Sadie Edwards, Elize Larsen, and Addi Wyatt will then compete in the 400m.
 
The Trailblazers will wrap up the day in Ogden with seven competitors in the 100m, including Davis, Gibson, Ashlynn Gilhula, Holt, Erin Hurst, Emma Terry, and Malaiyah Thomas.
 
Emilee Nelson and Allie Richardson will open Saturday's meet at Utah in Salt Lake City in the javelin, followed by Davis in the triple jump.
 
Five Trailblazers will compete in the 5000m, including Nicolette Coffman, Flippence, McLaughlin, Morgan, and Williams. DSU will then field seven runners in the 100m, including Gibson, Gilhula, Holt, Hurst, Larsen, Terry, and Thomas. Davis, Holt, Hurst, Gibson, Gilhula, Terry, and Thomas will also compete in the 200m.
 
Edwards, Royle, Sorensen, White and Wyatt will represent the Trailblazers in the 800m, while DSU will close out the weekend with two squads in the 4x400.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Trailblazers competed at the Utah Valley Collegiate Invitational last week and posted solid marks over the two days of competition to finish in third place in the team standings. Overall, DSU saw one school record broken while 11 other Dixie State participants tallied marks in nine different events which landed inside the top-10 of the Trailblazer record book.
 
2022 ROSTER: Dixie State entered the 2022 Outdoor Season with 35 student-athletes on the roster, including 25 freshmen, six sophomores, and four juniors, with athletic eligibility based on the 2020-21 COVID-19 blanket waiver for an extra year of eligibility.
 
COACHING STAFF: Derrick Atkins continues his second season as head coach at Dixie State, and is again joined by assistants Justin Decker (Distance), Elizabeth Cook (Distance), Casidy Howard (Throws), and Ross Decker as a volunteer assistant.
 
UP NEXT: Dixie State will return to competition on April 22 at the BYU Robison Invitational in Provo, Utah.
