Utah Tech softball head coach
Randy Simkins has announced the signing of six future Trailblazers for the 2023-24 season.
The 2023-24 incoming freshman class will include Gabi Giroux (IF / Aurora, CO. / Smoky Hill HS / Colorado Stars), Jayda Gleave (IF / Cedar City, UT. / Canyon View HS / Lil Rebels Gordie), Drew McKown (IF / Roseville, CA. / Granite Bay HS / AASA Pikas), Brooke Pisciotta (C / Gilbert, AZ. / Perry HS / Firecrackers AZ Marquez), Makanani Sonognini (OF / Lahaina, HI. / HP Baldwin HS / Maui Titans) and Celine Tirado (P / Sun Valley, CA. / Chatsworth Charter HS / Athletics Mercado).
Giroux is a senior four-year starter from Aurora, Colorado who was a first team all-league and first team all-state player at Smoky Hill High School. A confident, strong lefty hitting infielder, Giroux can play multiple infield positions and be a middle of the lineup hitter.
"Gabi is a fun kid, with a ton of personality who is very talented on the field" Simkins said. "She's a player we've been following for a few years now and have really enjoyed watching her develop at our camps and with her travel ball teams. Excited to see what she can do in a Trailblazer uniform."
Gleave is a senior at Canyon View High School in Cedar City, Utah. A very good athlete who has also played three years of volleyball and four years of basketball at Canyon View. She knows how to lead her team and compete within the different sports and that will serve her well as she competes for us on the field.
"Jayda just keeps getting better," Simkins said. "I've watched her for years and she just continues to grow and develop as an athlete and softball player. One of the most versatile recruits we've brought in, Jayda could see time as an infielder & outfielder and might even see time behind the plate. We're excited to get her on campus."
McKown is a middle infielder from Roseville CA. She's a true middle infielder, who can really pick it. A versatile hitter who can use the whole field and hit with power. Drew will be a problem for opposing pitchers to get out.
"Drew is a great kid who we're really excited to watch grow and progress during her time here at Utah Tech," Simkins said. "An excellent student, who is also a student of the game. She is driven to be excellent at whatever she does. A very good infielder and a hitter who can hit for average and power at the plate."
Pisciotta is a senior catcher from Perry HS in Gilbert, Arizona. Another versatile signee, Brooke is a catcher who can also play infield or outfield. She has a plus arm that serves her well in each of these positions. She has evolved into a very good hitter, who has proven she can hit top level pitching.
"Brooke will give us depth at multiple positions," Simkins said. "Very athletic player who gets better every time we watch her. Solid hitter who uses the whole field, who could hit in multiple spots in our lineup. Excited to see how she makes our team better."
Sonognini is from Lahaina, Hawaii on the island of Maui. She's a senior at H. P. Baldwin HS in Wailuku, Hawaii. She was named to All Hawaii second team and to the MIL All Stars D1 first team as an outfielder.
"Maka is our fourth recruit from the island of Maui and is going to be a special player to watch," Simkins said. "Her speed, range and the ability to track down fly balls will make her fun to watch in the outfield. She gets great reads on balls and routinely makes great plays in the outfield. She can steal bases, bunt and hit for power, so she's equally dangerous at the plate. Looking forward to a fun four years with Maka on the field for us.
Tirado is a senior at Chatsworth Charter HS in Chatsworth, California. A pitcher for Athletics Mecado Hovermale travel ball team that has been successful at the highest level. She helped pitch her team to a 2022 Tier II Alliance National Championship. Ranked #37 in Extra Innings Elite 100 for the class of 2023.
"Cece is a pitcher who has competed and won against the top teams in the country," Simkins said. "We're excited to have her fill the need on our staff from our two graduating seniors. She throws with good velocity and movement and loves to compete in big situations. We can't wait to see her in a Trailblazer uniform."
