Trailblazers to Host Beehive Classic Thursday through Sunday

Six of the seven Division I softball programs will be in action this weekend at Karl Brooks Field.

TRAILBLAZERS CONTINUE HOME STRETCH HOSTING BEEHIVE CLASSIC
The Trailblazers continue their home stretch this weekend hosting the Beehive Classic at Karl Brooks Field taking on Weber State twice, Big 12 foe Utah on Friday and Mountain West opponent Utah State on Sunday.

In addition to the Trailblazers' four games, there will also be nine other contests between programs from the state of Utah with a pair of games on Thursday, three games apiece on Friday & Saturday and one game on Sunday.

TRAILBLAZERS POST 4-1 WEEK AT LYMAN CLASSIC
The Trailblazers opened their home slate last weekend hosting the Lyman Classic going 4-1 with a pair of wins over CSU Bakersfield, a 14-11 comeback win over UC Davis and a 13-5 run-rule victory against Weber State.

PAPPAS EARNS WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
Sophomore infielder Kinley Pappas was named the WAC Player of the Week on Monday after putting together a strong week from the plate hitting .611 going 11-for-18 in five games at the Lyman Classic.

Pappas tallied eight extra-base knocks with three home runs, three triples and two doubles for a 1.556 slugging percentage.

Tying a program record belting three home runs on Sunday in a 80-72 win at Tarleton State, Pappas scored four runs & drove in six RBI's in a 13-5 win over Weber State.

Adding 10 runs scored and 12 RBI's, Pappas drew a pair of walks to reaching base 13 times in 20 plate appearances for a .650 on-base percentage.

She recorded multiple hits in four of five games and scored multiple runs & drove in multiple RBI's in three contests.

ABOUT WEBER STATE WILDCATS
Weber State comes into the Beehive Classic with a 2-13 mark earning a 12-4 run-rule victory in five innings over CSU Bakersfield at Utah Tech's Lyman Classic last weekend on Feb. 21 while dropping its other four contests.

The Wildcats are 1-4 on the road this season and 1-9 in neutral site contests and will face the Trailblazers twice, Southern Utah twice, Utah and Utah Valley.

Picked second in the Big Sky preseason poll, four Wildcats (Sadie Kirk, Taegan Smith, Abby Grundy & Cali McCraw) were named to the Big Sky Preseason Team.

Sophomore outfielder Jordan McMahon is leading the team with a .520 average and tops the team in hits (26), total bases (32), slugging percentage (.640),on-base percentage (.556) & stolen bases (3).

Freshman pitcher Kendall Freidinger leads the team with nine appearances and a team-best 4.25 ERA while also topping the team with 29.2 innings thrown & 18 strikeouts.

Six different Wildcats have made starts in the circle and opponents are hitting .330 from the plate and averaging 6.9 runs.

ABOUT UTAH UTES
Utah is 11-5 overall on the season coming off a 3-3 weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic earning wins over CSUN (8-1), Rutgers (3-2) and UC Riverside (1-0).

The Utes are coming off a 13-40 overall record in 2025 and a 5-19 mark in the Big 12.

Utah was picked to finish 10th out of 11 teams in the Big 12 preseason poll and were one of three teams not to have a preseason team selection.

Three Utes are hitting over .300 on the season led by freshman infielder Mia Gomez hitting .458 and has a team-leading 22 hits. Kennedy Proctor and Payton Crank each have scored a team-leading 10 runs apiece with Proctor has driven in 16 RBI's and tallied 11 extra-base hits.

Senior pitcher Raci Miranda has a perfect 3-0 mark in the circle with a 0.79 ERA and is holding opponents to a .129 average. Junior Shelbee Jones and sophomore Hailey Maestretti also have four and three wins, respectively with the two combining for 56 strikeouts and 71.2 innings tossed.

ABOUT UTAH STATE AGGIES
Utah State is 9-6 overall on the season and went 2-3 last weekend at the Georgia Classic hosted by Georgia earning a pair of wins over Seton Hall while falling twice to the Bulldogs and once to Virginia Tech.

The Aggies opened the season with a 4-1 record at the Aggie Classic hosted by Texas A&M and followed up the next weekend with a 3-2 record at the Cal Baptist Classic.

USU went 26-26 overall in 2025 and tied for fourth in the MW with an 11-11 mark.

The Aggies were picked to finish fifth in the MW preseason poll and had a pair of players on the MW preseason poll in catcher Grace Matej and outfielder Kya Pratt.

Senior infielder Alex Bunton is leading the Aggies hitting .442 and tops the team with 13 RBI's and a .698 slugging percentage.

In the circle, freshmen Kendall Cochran is leading the team with a 2.28 ERA and is 2-0. Senior Emmalyn Brinka is 4-3 with a 3.99 ERA and has a team-leading 28 strikeouts in 33.1 innings of work.

TRAILBLAZERS EARN PAIR OF WINS IN SAN DIEGO
The Trailblazers earned their first two wins of the season last weekend at the USD/UCSD Tournament winning their final two contests of tournament play defeating Colorado State, 6-4 and Weber State, 8-2.

Tournament action started earlier in the week dropping a doubleheader against UC San Diego, 9-0 in five innings & a tough 9-8 setback, and fell 9-2 to Omaha on Friday morning.

GLANCE BACK AT OPENING WEEKEND IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
The Trailblazers opened the 2026 season on Feb. 6-8 in Southern California falling in all five contests.

Utah Tech dropped a pair of close contests on Friday to Oregon State (5-2) and Long Beach State (0-2) in Long Beach before dropping a high-scoring 11-6 decision at UC Riverside on Saturday.

The weekend closed out on Sunday at Loyola Marymount falling to the Lions, 9-1 in five innings and Big West preseason favorite UC Santa Barbara, 10-4.

FIVE TRAILBLAZERS HITTING OVER .300
In addition to Pappas' strong start, four other Trailblazers are off to great starts at the plate with LB Kahahawai-Kekona (.421), Sadie Phillips (.421), Gabi Giroux (.393) and Baylee Howley (.333) all hitting above .300.

All five along with Lauren Jones have notched 10 or more hits on the season.

SIMKINS IN YEAR 18 AT UTAH TECH
Head coach Rany Simkins enters his 18th season at Utah Tech this season with a 596-293 (.670) overall record.

After coaching the Trailblazers as a junior college in 2004, Simkins returned in 2010 and led UT to 10 straight Division II tournaments, including the 2015 DII College World Series.

In five seasons in Division I, Simkins has earned 107 wins and helped the Trailblazers win the 2023 WAC regular season title.

TRAILBLAZERS IN THE NCAA ERA
Utah Tech is 650-335 (.660) overall in its 19 seasons in the NCAA era.

In his 16 seasons leading the Trailblazers in the NCAA era, Simkins is 547-287 (.656).

HOME RECORD AT KARL BROOKS FIELD
The Trailblazers are 326-113 (.743) at home in the NCAA era.

The Blazers are 283-99 at home under Simkins.

The Trailblazers head to the UNLV Red & Black Classic next weekend with five contests in Las Vegas from March 6-8.
