The Dixie State women's tennis team ended their season Saturday morning with a 6-1 loss to UT Rio Grande Valley.
UTRGV (5-16, 3-3 WAC) came into the match tied with the Trailblazers in the Western Athletic Conference standings. The two teams battled for sole possession of the number four spot.
The Vaqueros began the day by taking the No. 1 doubles match from the Blazers; however, Dixie State (5-15, 2-4 WAC) came back with a 7-5 win in No. 2 doubles courtesy of
Juliana Honczaruk and
Rachel Mellor. UTRGV would end up claiming the doubles point after winning in No. 3 doubles, giving them a one-point advantage moving into singles play.
Dixie State struggled in singles play today, giving up five of the six points to UTRGV.
Alexandra Hildreth took her match in the number two spot off a default giving the Blazers their only point of the match.
"It was less then an ideal start to the season as we moved into D1, but we are grateful that we eventually were able to start practicing and playing," said Head Coach
Eric Pelton. "Tough we came up just short of a fourth place finish in the [WAC] we felt good about the wins we did get, and look to build on those this next year!"
DSU finished its first Division I season with a 5-15 overall record, and a 2-4 record in the WAC which landed them at number five in the final WAC standings.
