Less than 24 hours after completing an improbable come-from-behind victory of its own, No. 20 Dixie State fell victim to a late California Baptist rally as the Trailblazers dropped the series finale to the Lancers, 10-9, Saturday afternoon at Totman Stadium. Despite the loss, DSU took three of four from CBU to move to 20-6 overall, 9-3 in Pacific West Conference play.
Dixie State picked up right where it left off from Friday night's doubleheader sweep as the Trailblazers led off Saturday's game with six-straight hits en route to a quick 4-0 lead.
Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Kapolei HS),
Logan Porter (Surprise, Ariz./Valley Vista HS),
Miles Bice (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) and
Tyler Mildenberg (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS) all drove in runs on base hits as part of the rally.
CBU (17-9/8-4 PacWest) trimmed the deficit to 4-3 with a run in third and two more in fifth, but Dixie State responded with another four-run frame in the sixth to extend to a commanding 8-3 advantage. The Trailblazers scored all four runs with only one hit, which came on a
Wyatt Branch (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) RBI-single.
Tyler Baker (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) executed a squeeze bunt to bring home two more runs, while a passed ball led to another DSU tally.
After Dixie State struck for one more run on a Mildenberg sacrifice fly in the seventh, the Lancers began to claw back into the game, plating a run in the seventh before using a pair of home runs to push across three more runs in the eighth to cut the deficit to 9-7. CBU then completed the comeback with three runs in the bottom of the ninth as the Lancers took advantage of four DSU walks and a hit batter, which came with the bases loaded and two outs that forced in the game-winning run.
Baker led the Trailblazers with two of DSU's eight hits on the day, while Mildenberg collected two RBI. The loss spoiled a bounce-back start for sophomore righthander
Preston Hannay (Murray, Utah/Murray HS) (ND), who struck out three and scattered three hits and nine runs over six innings of work, though he did not figure into the decision.
Dixie State returns home for a crucial four-game set vs. current PacWest leader Point Loma next weekend at Bruce Hurst Field. The series will be played in a pair of doubleheaders, the first coming Friday, March 24 at 4 p.m., followed by a second twin bill Saturday, March 25 at 12 noon.
