No. 19 Baseball Sweeps Friday DH from No. 25 Point Loma

File tosses four-hit ShO; Mildenberg goes 6-for-8 overall as the Trailblazers take opening pair from PacWest leaders

No. 20 Dixie State used a pair of solid starting pitching performances and rapped out 27 combined base hits to take both ends of a Friday doubleheader, 7-0 and 11-3, from Pacific West Conference leader No. 25 Point Loma at Bruce Hurst Field.

Junior righthander Dylan File (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) (W, 5-0) fired a complete-game four-hit shutout in the opener to set the tone for the night. After escaping a first-inning jam, File retired 20 of the next 22 Sea Lions he faced, including 13-straight over the middle four-plus innings.

Meanwhile, the Trailblazers (22-6/11-3 PacWest) gave File all the runs he would need in the home half of the first as DSU tallied four runs and four hits in the frame. DSU loaded the bases on hits from Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) and Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Kapolei HS), while Logan Porter (Surprise, Ariz./Valley Vista HS) was hit by a pitch one batter later. Tyler Mildenberg (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS) then laced a single to centerfield to drive home two runs, while Bryce Feist (Emmett, Idaho/Rocky Mountain HS) doubled in Porter and Miles Bice (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) plated Mildenberg on a run-scoring ground out.

After DSU tacked on an insurance run in the seventh, the Sea Lions (16-6/8-2 PacWest) loaded the bases on an infield error, a base hit and a wild pitch on strike three on what would have been the final out of frame. However File escaped and further damage as he induced a pop-up to shallow right field that Mildenberg corralled to keep Point Loma off the scoreboard.

The Trailblazers would strike for two more runs in the home eighth, thanks in part to a pair of triples from Kamachi and Mildenberg. File then set down PLNU in order in the ninth to close out the game.

Dixie State finished with 12 hits in game one, including a 3-for-4 effort with three RBI and two runs scored for Mildenberg, while Kamachi finished with three hits and two runs scored. File struck out one in recording his second complete-game shutout of the season and the third of his career, which moved him atop DSU's career solo shutouts list (NCAA-era).

The Trailblazers duplicated their game one feat by plating four more first-inning runs in the nightcap to bolt to an early 4-0. Tyler Baker (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) led off the frame with a single, then after he was bunted over, he stole third and came home on an errant throw by PLNU catcher Mike Gordner to stake DSU to a quick 1-0 lead. PLNU starter Trevor Abshire (L, 2-2) then walked four-straight Trailblazers to force in another run, while Jake Davison (Taylorsville, Utah/Taylorsville HS) singled home two more baserunners to give DSU the four-run cushion.

The early run support was more than enough for senior righthander Mason Hilty (Richland, Wash./Richland HS) (W, 6-1) who hurled five scoreless innings and retired 15-straight Sea Lions after giving up a pair of one-out singles in the Point Loma first inning. Meanwhile DSU scored runs in its first five offensive frames overall to extend to a 9-0 advantage.

Point Loma finally broke through with two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to trim the Trailblazer lead to 9-3, but DSU came back with single runs in the home seventh and eighth stanzas to put the game out of reach.

Dixie State pounded out 15 hits in game two as Baker finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Mildenberg collected three more safeties (6-for-8 on the day) to go with an RBI and two runs scored. Hilty struck out five with no walks and scattered seven hits and three runs in seven innings of work.

Dixie State and Point Loma will wrap up their four-game series with another twin bill Saturday beginning at 12 noon at Bruce Hurst Field.
