Women’s Tennis claims two wins Friday in Colorado

The Dixie State women's tennis team claimed two victories in Grand Junction, Colorado, on Friday, rolling to a 7-2 victory over Colorado Christian and outlasting Metro State-Denver, 6-3.

The Trailblazers (3-0) won two out of three doubles matchups to open the match vs. Colorado Christian. Sophomore Lacey Hancock (St. George, Utah/Pine View HS) and junior Alex Makashov (Toronto, Canada/King City Secondary School) earned an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, while senior Laura Hartle (Salt Lake City, Utah/East HS) and freshman Maria Kana Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii/Myron B. Thompson Academy) cruised to an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Dixie State claimed victories in five out of the six singles matches for the second consecutive day. Freshman Frances Hina Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii/Myron B. Thompson Academy) led the way in singles play and rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 5 singles. Hancock nearly duplicated the feat, winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Later in the day, the Trailblazers opened their match against Metro State-Denver the same way. DSU won two of out three doubles matches to take an early lead. Freshmen duo Kyra Harames (Spokane, Wash./Central Valley HS) and Hina Goldsmith claimed a 9-8 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Hartle and Kana Goldsmith remained undefeated at No. 3 doubles with an 8-4 win.

Hancock led the way in singles play, earning a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles to set the tone for four DSU singles wins. Makashov overcame a 5-2 deficit in the first set at No. 3 singles to win 7-5, 6-2, while Harames claimed a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles and Hina Goldsmith earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 6 singles.

Dixie State closes its four-match trip and its fall schedule on Saturday in a matchup with Colorado State-Pueblo at 8 a.m.
