Women’s Tennis opens trip with win over Colorado Mesa

The Dixie State women's tennis team opened its four-match trip on Thursday with a 6-3 win over Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The Mavericks jumped to an early 2-1 lead in the match, taking two of three doubles matches. Senior Laura Hartle (Salt Lake City, Utah/East HS) and freshman Maria Kana Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii/Myron B. Thompson Academy) recorded the only DSU doubles victory at the No. 3 spot, earning an 8-3 victory.

The Trailblazers (1-0) responded during singles play, earning wins in five of six singles matches. Sophomore Lacey Hancock (St. George, Utah/Pine View HS) led the way with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No.1 singles, while junior Alex Makashov (Toronto, Canada/King City Secondary School) earned her first win at Dixie State with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles.

Kana Goldsmith and Hartle each added to their doubles victory as Goldsmith recorded a 7-6 (0-4), 6-2 win at No. 3 singles and Hartle earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles. Freshman Kyra Harames (Spokane, Wash./Central Valley HS) played to a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, while freshman Frances Hina Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii/Myron B. Thompson Academy) battled but fell 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 at No. 6 singles.

Dixie State continues its four-match trip in Grand Junction on Friday, taking on Colorado Christian at 8 a.m. and Metro State-Denver at 4:30 p.m.
