Women’s Tennis travels to Colorado Mesa for Maverick Duals

The Dixie State women's tennis team travels to Grand Junction, Colorado, this week for the Colorado Mesa Maverick Duals from Thursday to Saturday.

The Trailblazers will play four matches in three days, beginning with a 6 p.m. Thursday evening matchup with host Colorado Mesa. DSU will play two matches on Friday, taking on Colorado Christian at 8 a.m., and Metro State-Denver at 4:30 p.m. The Trailblazers wrap up their four-match trip on Saturday in an 8 a.m. match with Colorado State-Pueblo.

Dixie State returns two players, sophomore Lacey Hancock (St. George, Utah/Pine View HS) and senior Laura Hartle (Salt Lake City, Utah/East HS), from the 2015-16 squad and looks to build on its 5-13 record from last season.

Hancock recorded a 9-8 overall record in singles play in the 2015-16 season, finishing the year at 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 7-8 at No. 2 singles. Hancock posted an 8-10 mark in doubles play. Hartle returns as the only senior on the roster after logging a 5-10 record at No. 3 singles and a 4-14 mark in overall doubles play last season.

Six new players join the ranks for the 2016-17 season, including juniors Alex Makashov (Toronto, Canada/King City Secondary School) and Kaylee Milligan (Silver City, N.M./Silver HS), and freshmen Frances Hina Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii/Myron B. Thompson Academy), Maria Kana Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii/Myron B. Thompson Academy), Kyra Harames (Spokane, Wash./Central Valley HS), and Sydney Nichols (Elwood, Utah/Bear River HS).

Makashov comes to Dixie State after playing her sophomore season at East Central University and her freshman season at Cal State L.A. Milligan joins the team after competing as a multi-sport athlete at Silver High School in Silver City, New Mexico. Twin sisters Hina and Kana Goldsmith come to Dixie State after playing in Hawaii and Japan during high school. Harames prepped at Central Valley High School in Spokane, Washington, and Nichols joins the team after playing at Bear River High School in Garland, Utah.
