Utah Tech wrapped up the 2022-23 season with a seventh place showing at the 2023 Western Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championships on Sunday at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.
The Trailblazers opened play on Friday with a 1-under 287 to stand tied for fifth place, then followed that up with a 4-under 284 on Saturday, but fell one spot to t-sixth. Utah Tech went one shot lower on Sunday, carding a 5-under 283, to finish at minus-10 854, which is the sixth-lowest team score in program history.
Senior
Davis Heslington closed out his Trailblazer career as he took individual runner-up honors at minus-12 204. Heslington fired a collegiate career-low 6-under 66 with seven birdies on his opening loop on Friday, then followed it with consecutive 3-under 69s on Saturday and Sunday with nine more birdies combined over those final two rounds.
Heslington's 204 was a collegiate career-low and tied for the third-lowest 54-hole score in program history, while his 36-hole 135 total was also a career-low and tied for the second-lowest total in program history. In addition, the senior broke the Utah Tech single-season scoring average record (72.31) and finished with the fifth-lowest career stroke average (74.03) in school history.
Meanwhile, freshmen
Parker Reese and
Zach Felts both tied for 31
st at even par 216. Reese followed an opening 3-over 75 with rounds of 69 and even par 72, while Felts carded three-straight 72s on the weekend.
Senior
Tyler Jones finished in a four-way tie for 39
th at plus-2 218, which featured a second round 1-under 71, and sophomore
Taft Lewis (76-76-74) wound up in solo 54
th at plus-10 226.
Grand Canyon (280-273-277-830; -34) and New Mexico State (277-276-282-835; -29) entered Sunday's final round tied atop the leaderboard. However GCU combined to fire a final round 11-under 277 to beat the Aggies by five strokes and claim the team title.
Utah Tech finished its third season of NCAA Division I play with six top-10 showings in 11 team events, highlighted by a pair of sixth-place finishes at both the Southern Utah Pat Hicks (Feb. 10-12) and the UC San Diego (March 27-28) during the spring season.
