Late Rally Dooms Trailblazers in Non-Conference Loss at UVU on Monday

Utah Tech could not overcome a big Wolverine sixth inning as the Trailblazers dropped an 8-6 non-conference decision at Utah Valley on Monday night at the UCCU Ballpark.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth, Utah Tech struck for two runs in each of its next two innings to bolt to a 5-2 advantage. Hank Dodson led off Trailblazer fourth with a solo home run to left, his second home run of the season, while Mathew Ivancich chased home Cayden Clark with a two-out single to center.

The Trailblazers (9-27) went yard again to open the UT fifth, this time it was Zach Thomas, who homered for the second-straight game when he deposited the first pitch of the stanza over the left field wall.

Dodson then walked, took second on a wild pitch and was singled to third by Clark before scampering home on a Karson Irvin flyout.

Utah Valley (20-16) trimmed the Blazer lead to 5-3 with a Luke Iverson single in the home fifth and threatened for more with runners on first and second with one out. However Taye Newman would come out of the UT bullpen and would get Matthew Schwartz to roll into an inning-ending double play to end the rally.

The Wolverines would reclaim the lead an inning later as they struck for four runs, all of which came with two outs in the frame.

Garrett Broussard tied the game with a two-run homer to left, then after an error extended the inning, followed by a walk and a wild pitch on strike three that loaded the bases, Iverson laced a double to right center to drive in two more runs and put UVU back on top at 7-5.

Utah Tech came back with a run in the seventh and had a chance to tie or take the lead in the eighth with runners at the corners after a one-out Parker Schmidt double and a Thomas single.

However Utah Valley managed to escape the inning with the lead intact, and would tack on an insurance run in the home eighth with a Daniel Dickinson homer. Wolverine reliever Josh Brown (S, 3) then retired the Blazers in order in the ninth to end the game.

Thomas tied a season high with three hits to go with his two RBI to pace the Blazer offense. Meanwhile Schmidt finished with two hits and Shane Taylor extended his career-long hitting streak to 17-straight games with a sixth inning infield single as Utah Tech collected 10 hits on the night.

Utah Tech returns to WAC play this weekend when the Trailblazers head to Phoenix for a three-game road series at Grand Canyon.
