Trailblazers Stunned at CBU Saturday, 9-7

Utah Tech was felled by a late Lancer rally as the Trailblazers suffered a 9-7 loss at California Baptist in the second game of a WAC weekend series on Saturday night at James W. Totman Stadium. The loss, UT's sixth-straight overall, dropped the Blazers to 7-20 overall, 2-6 in WAC play.

After being shut out on three hits in Friday's series opener, the Trailblazers got on the scoreboard first in game two thanks to a Tyson Fisher solo home run off the scoreboard in left center to start the second inning.

CBU (14-13/7-4 WAC) would pull even with a run in the home third before jumping out to a 3-1 advantage in the fourth when Jake Skipworth doubled down the third base line to plate two more Lancers.

Utah Tech quickly countered in the fifth when after Zach Thomas reached on a CBU error and Blake Borgogno singled and stole second, Hank Dodson rapped a double of his own down the third base line to chase home both base runners and knot the score at 3-3.

Dodson later took third on a wild pitch and put the Trailblazers back on top at 4-3 when he scored on a Logan Jackson groundout.

The Lancers pulled even with a run in the sixth, only to see Utah Tech jump back on top the seventh with an Ethan He RBI-single and a Parker Schmidt pinch hit run-scoring double that made it a 6-4 game heading into the stretch.

Utah Tech extended its advantage to 7-4 on a Jackson RBI-single in the eighth, only to see CBU storm back in the home half of the stanza with five runs to erase the deficit at take a 9-7 lead.

CBU reliever Jacob Wilson (S, 1) then came on and retired the Blazers in order in the ninth to close out the game and the series win.

Utah Tech finished 10 hits on the night, with Fisher, Shane Taylor and Borgogno each collecting two safetes apiece. Meanwhile, Fisher's homer was not only his sixth of the season and the 38th of his career, it marked the fourth time in his last five games at Totman Stadium that he senior had gone yard.

Sophomore lefthander Carston Herman pitched into the sixth and scattered four runs and five hits with five strikeouts, but did not figure in the decision.

Utah Tech will look to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. (MT).
