Utah Tech clinched its first WAC series win, and its first series win overall, of the season with a 10-7 victory over New Mexico State on Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field. With the win, the Trailblazers improved to 7-14 overall, 2-1 in WAC play.
Â
The Blazers led wire-to-wire, thanks in part to a big five-run first inning. Utah Tech sent 11 batters to the plate and tallied only three hits, but did manage to capitalize on two costly Aggie errors, along with two walks and two hit batters in the rally.Â
Â
NM State (2-15/1-5) clawed back with three two-out runs in the second, though the Trailblazers did manage to get one of those runs back in the home half of the frame when
Zach Thomas legged out a lead-off triple and scored on a wild pitch.
Â
Clinging to a 6-4 lead in the fifth, UT rightfielder
Logan Jackson led off the inning with his second home run of series.
Shane Taylor then followed suit nine pitches later with a solo blast to straight-away center field to stretch the advantage to 8-4.Â
Â
Utah Tech would tack on another run on a passed ball in the sixth, and after both teams plated single runs the seventh, the Aggies used a Damone Hill pinch-hit, two-run homer to make it a three-run game in the eighth.Â
Â
Sophomore lefthander
Carsten Herman (S, 2) came on out of the UT bullpen and recorded the final out of the eighth, then struck out two and worked around a two-out hit and an error in the ninth to close out the series win.
Â
Utah Tech outhit NM State 11-7, with Taylor and Thomas each collecting three hits. Meanwhile,
Chase Rodriguez doubled and finished with two safeties as the top four in the Blazer lineup combined to go 8-for-16 with four RBI and six runs scored.
Â
Junior reliever
Carson Angeroth (W, 1-0) struck out three and allowed only one hit in 3.2 innings of work to earn his first decision as a Trailblazer.Â
Utah Tech will travel back to the desert for a midweek game at PAC-12 power Arizona this Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. (PT), at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson.
