Trailblazers Knock Off Loyola Marymount Tuesday Night, 6-4

Dixie State snapped its three-game skid and broke through on its current southern California road swing with a 6-4 victory at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday night at Page Stadium.

DSU (20-32) had runners on the base paths in each of the first five innings and managed to break through in the third with two runs without benefit of a hit to jump out to an early lead.

Shane Taylor reached on a Lion error to lead off the frame and would later advance to second on wild pitch before stealing third. Parker Schmidt then walked and stole second, while Tyson Fisher drew a free pass ahead of Tyler Hollow, who was hit by a Conner Kershaw pitch to bring home the first Trailblazer run.

Zach Thomas followed with a flyout to center to plate Schmidt, but Fisher got caught in a rundown between third and home to end the inning.

Dixie State would take advantage of another LMU miscue in the fourth to extend to a commanding 5-0 advantage. After Will Chambers walked and Mathew Ivancich singled to start the stanza, Jagun Leavitt laid down a bunt in front of Kershaw, who fired wide of the third base to try and cut down the lead runner.

The ball wound up going into foul territory down the left field line, which allowed both runners to score. Leavitt would later take third on a Taylor flyout and scampered home thanks to a Schmidt groundout.

The Trailblazers finally recorded their first earned run of the game in fifth when Fisher led off the inning with his eighth home run of the season. The junior's long ball pulled him into a tie for the team lead and pushed the Blazer lead to 6-0.

While the offense was building on its lead, the DSU pitching staff was in control in the early going as three Blazer hurlers combined to strike out five while allowing only three LMU hits over four shutout innings.

The Lions (18-30-1) got off the deck in the home fifth, striking for four runs on four hits and a walk to make it a two-run game.

However that would be all the runs Dixie State would give up as senior Jimmy Borzone came on in the sixth and struck out seven over three scoreless innings. Sophomore southpaw Ben Hart (S, 1) then worked around a one-out double in the ninth to earn his first collegiate save.

Dixie State tallied eight hits on the night as seven of the nine starters in the Blazer line-up had at least one hit, led by Fisher who went 2-for-4 including his homer. Sophomore righthander Ryan Hardman (W, 4-2) picked up his fourth win of the season after he scattered two hits over two scoreless innings with three strikeouts as the Blazers' opener. In all, seven Blazer hurlers combined for 15 total strikeouts in the game, eight of which came from the sixth inning on.

Tuesday night's win also served as the 350th-career coaching victory for DSU Head Coach Chris Pfatenhauer (350-251-1).

Dixie State will wrap up the 2022 season with a three-game WAC series at former PacWest rival California Baptist this Thursday-through-Saturday in Riverside.
