Trailblazers Fall in Series Opener at CBU on Thursday Night

Dixie State opened its final series of the 2022 season on the wrong end of a 10-3 road decision at California Baptist on Thursday night at Totman Stadium.

DSU (20-33/12-16 WAC) found itself trailing early as the Lancers used a pair of long balls to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead after two complete. Jake Skipworth got CBU on the board with a two-out, two-run blast in the home first, while Ulises Caballero connected for a solo home run off of DSU starter Jake Dahle an inning later.

The Trailblazers managed to get one of those runs back in the third with a Shane Taylor two-out RBI. Chase Rodriguez pulled a ball through the Lancer shift for a lead-off single and after a pair of groundouts moved him to third base, Taylor laced a 1-2 Spencer Bengard offering back up the middle to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Then after Dahle set down CBU in order in the third, Tyson Fisher drew the Blazers to within a run at 3-2 in the fourth with his team-leading ninth homer of the year, an opposite field solo shot over the right center wall.

Tyler Hollow followed with a two-out double to right center and the Blazers got the go-ahead run on four pitches later when Rodriguez was plunked by Bengard, but the Lancer righthander was able to get out of the jam with the lead intact.

CBU (32-18/18-10 WAC) went on to add single runs in the both the fourth and sixth frames, while Bengard (W, 3-3) retired the next nine Blazers he faced. The Lancers then broke the game open with five more runs in the seventh to extend to an 10-2 advantage and cruised from there to draw first blood in the three-game WAC set.

Hollow's fourth inning double, the 39th of the senior second baseman's career, was part of a 2-for-4 night with an RBI to lead the Blazers' offense, which finished with seven hits in the game. Meanwhile Fisher's home run was the 30th of his career and vaulted him into a tie for third place on DSU's career homer list (30 – Brett Adams; 2008-10). Fisher also moved to within two homers of tying former teammate Jake Engel (32; 2017-21) for the DSU career home run record.

Dahle (L, 2-6) was effective in his final outing of the 2022 season, scattering four runs on six hits over five innings with five strikeouts.

DSU will look to even the series in game two on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. (PT).
