Fisher Homers Twice to Lead the Trailblazers Past Sacramento State Saturday, 18-7

Tyson Fisher homered twice and drove in a career high six runs as Dixie State even its WAC road series at Sacramento State with an 18-7 win in eight innings on Saturday night at John Smith Field.

The Trailblazers (7-6/3-2 WAC) pounced on the Hornets for crooked numbers in each of the first two innings to race out to a commanding 8-0 lead. Aided by a pair of two-out Sac State miscues, DSU struck for five runs in the opening frame.

After Tyler Hollow and Will Chambers both singled to extend the inning, the Hornets committed a throwing error on a Fisher ground ball to third base, which allowed Hollow to come around and score the game's first run. Chase Rodriguez then followed with a two-run double to right field.

Then on the ensuing pitch, Sacramento State (9-6/1-1 WAC) mishandled a ground ball to the left side of the second base bag, which allowed Parker Schmidt to reach and Rodriguez to scamper to third. Schmidt then stole second and Mathew Ivancich drove in both base runners with an opposite single to right to cap the rally.

DSU tacked on three more runs in the second, with Fisher providing the big blow with his first home run of the season, a towering two-run blast to straight away centerfield and out of the stadium to give the Blazers their eight-run cushion.

Sacramento State answered with two unearned runs of its own in the home second, thanks to consecutive DSU errors that opened the stanza. The Hornets would use the long ball in the fourth to plate three more runs to cut the deficit to 8-5. Josh Rolling led off the frame with a solo homer to left field, and following a Steven Moretto base hit, Dylan McPhillips clubbed a two-run home run to left to pull his side to within three runs.

Dixie State would get one of those runs back in the fifth with a Jagun Leavitt RBI-double, and Fisher would extend the Blazer lead to 12-5 in the sixth with a three-run shot to center.

Sac State made a 12-7 game with two runs in the home sixth and had the bases with one out in the frame, but Trailblazer reliever Shane Hardman slammed the door shut on any thoughts of an extended Hornet rally as he came on got a strikeout and a ground out to end the threat.

The Trailblazers quickly pushed the lead back to seven in the seventh when Kaden Hollow doubled down the right field line to plate Leavitt and Shane Taylor, who both reached on one-out walks.

DSU went on to score four more runs in the eighth, while Hardman and Taye Newman combined to retire eight of nine Hornet hitters from the sixth inning on to close out the run-rule win.

Fisher's two-homer night was the first of his collegiate career as he finished 2-for-5 with a walk and three runs scored. The junior outfielder also posted the program's 29th individual two-homer game in the program's NCAA era and became the 13th different player in the four-year era to drive in at least six runs.

Hollow, Chambers and Ivancich also collected two hits apiece as DSU outhit Sacramento State 12-11. Sophomore righthander Brett Porthan (W, 3-0) struck out four and scattered five runs (three earned) and seven hits over five innings to earn his third win of the season.

The Trailblazers will go for the series win in Sunday's series finale at 1 p.m. (MT).
