Dixie State clinched its first road WAC series win of the 2022 season with a hard-fought 4-3 victory at Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon at John Smith Field. With the series win, DSU moved to 8-6 overall, 4-2 in conference play.
Â
The Trailblazers drew first blood with a run in the second inning with a
Mathew Ivancich safety squeeze down the first base line to plate
Will Chambers, who singled to lead off the frame.
Â
With two on and two out in the home half of the frame, Gunner Gouldsmith doubled to right field to drive in the Hornets' (9-7/1-2 WAC) run. However DSU escaped further damage on the play when
Tyson Fisher fired the ball into infielder
Tyler Hollow, who fired a strike to catcher
Kaden Hollow at the plate to cut down the early go-ahead run and end the inning.
Â
Sacramento State did grab the lead in the third on a one-out Josh Walker solo home run to right field and had runners on second and third two batters later, but senior righthander
Jimmy Borzone limited the Hornets to just the one run as he struck Josh Rolling and got Steven Moretto to pop up to
Tyler Hollow to retire the side.
Â
DSU wrestled the lead back with two runs in the fifth on a
Kaden Hollow RBI-single and a bases loaded wild pitch. The Trailblazers had a chance for more with the bases loaded and two outs, but Hornet right fielder Cesar Valero made a diving grab on a shallow
Chase Rodriguez fly ball to keep it a 3-2 game.
Borzone hurled a shutdown inning in the Hornet fifth before being lifted after a one-out infield single in the home sixth.
Ben Hart then came on and retired five-straight with a pair of strikeouts to get the game to the eighth inning.
Â
After the Trailblazers were retired in order in their half of the eighth, the Hornets cashed in a hit batter, a single and a wild pitch for the tying run off of sophomore closer
Ryan Hardman (W, 2-0), which came on a Moretto sacrifice fly.
Dixie State reclaimed the lead in the ninth, which started with
Jack Walker getting plunked on the first pitch of the frame. Walker later stole second with one out and advanced to third on a
Jagun Leavitt groundout.
Â
Blazer leadoff hitter
Shane Taylor then stepped up and laced a 1-1 Jack Zalasky (L, 3-1) offering down the right field line to double home Walker carrying the go-ahead run.
Â
Hardman would retire the Hornets in order in the bottom of the ninth to close out the series win.
Â
DSU finished with six hits on the day, with Taylor and
Kaden Hollow each collecting two hits and an RBI. Borzone scattered two runs and seven hits with five strikeouts in his 5.1 innings of work, but did not figure into the decision.
Â
Dixie State will close out its five-game road trip with a two-game, non-conference series at Nevada this Tuesday and Wednesday in Reno.
