Trailblazers Split Saturday Twin Bill with North Dakota State

Dixie State split the middle two games of its four-game home series with North Dakota State on Saturday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field. DSU rode a strong pitching performance from righthander Brett Porthan to claim game one in seven innings, 6-2, while NDSU claimed its first win of the series by the same 6-2 count in the nightcap.

The Trailblazers (3-3) roughed up the Bison for four runs over their first three offensive frames to bolt to an early lead. Kaden Hollow quickly got DSU on the board in the first inning with a run-scoring triple down the right field line, then scampered home carrying the second run on the very next pitch when older brother Tyler Hollow flew out to center field.

Shane Taylor made it a 3-0 game an inning later with a two-out RBI double, while Kaden Hollow homered over the wall in right center to lead off the third to stake the Blazers to a 4-0 advantage.

Meanwhile Porthan (W, 1-0) was in complete control, striking out six and retiring 15 of the first 16 Bison hitters he faced over his first five innings of work.

However NDSU (4-3) looked to have solved the sophomore in the sixth inning as the Bison struck for two runs on two hits and a walk to cut the Blazer lead in half at 4-2 with two outs in the stanza.

With the tying run at the plate, Bison infielder Peter Brookshaw tried to steal second to move into scoring position, but Kaden Hollow fired a strike to Tyler Hollow at the bag, and the elder Hollow applied the tag to end the threat.

DSU got those two runs back in the home sixth when Taylor cashed in a Mathew Ivancich single and a Jagun Leavitt walk with another two-out run scoring double to push the lead back to four at 6-2.

Junior reliever Jake Dahle then came on the seventh and worked around a one-out single to close out the win.

Kaden Hollow finished a double shy from hitting for the cycle as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Taylor tied a career-high tying three RBI as part of a 2-for-4 effort as DSU outhit NDSU 10-4.

Porthan struck out a career-high seven and surrendered just the two runs and three hits in six complete to earn his first win of the season.

In the nightcap, North Dakota State jumped out to an early advantage with three runs on two hits in the top of the first to build a 3-0 lead.

The Trailblazers would put at least one runner on base in the first, second, and fourth innings, but couldn't turn the opportunities into runs as NDSU turned critical double plays in both the first and the third inning.

Meanwhile, the Bison tacked on one run in the top of the fifth and two more runs in the top of the sixth to push the lead to 6-0.

Dixie State broke the NDSU shutout bid in the bottom of the seventh when Ivancich drove an RBI single to center field to plate Tyson Fisher from second to cut the lead to 6-1.

The Trailblazers added another run in the bottom of the ninth when Taylor singled up the middle to bring home Ivancich to trim the NDSU advantage to the final tally of 6-2.

Ivancich, Fisher, and Taylor finished with three hits at the plate in the nightcap, while Taye Newman took the loss on the mound to drop to 0-1 on the season.

Dixie State will close out its four-game set with NDSU in a Sunday matinee beginning at 1 p.m.
