Dixie State dropped the second game of its season opening series to PAC-12 member Washington State by a 19-5 count on Friday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.
The Cougars (5-1) pounced on Trailblazer pitching to the tune of three first inning runs, followed by three more in the third, to bolt out to an early 6-0 lead and never looked back from there. In all, WSU scored in seven of its nine offensive frames and pounded out 16 hits, including four home runs and seven total extra base hits on the day.
DSU (0-2) was limited to just four hits, though one of those safeties left the yard as
Tyson Fisher connected on the Blazers' first Division I home run, a solo blast to left field with one out in the home fifth.
Junior southpaw
Jack Gonzales (L, 0-1) struck out five, but was roughed up for five runs on four hits over 2.1 innings of work to drop his season debut. Meanwhile, Cougar righthander Zane Mills (W, 2-0) fanned 13 Trailblazers and scattered three hits and one run over seven complete to earn the win.
The two teams will play game three of their four game series on Saturday afternoon beginning at 2:05 p.m.
