No. 20 Baseball Sweeps Friday DH at California Baptist

Trailblazers use huge late rally to take the opener, post win No. 20 in the finale

Fueled by the biggest comeback in the program's NCAA-era, No. 20 Dixie State swept both ends of a Friday Pacific West Conference doubleheader at California Baptist at Totman Stadium. The Trailblazers rallied from a nine-run deficit with 11 runs over the final two innings to take the opener, 14-12, and completed the sweep with a 6-3 triumph in the seven-inning nightcap.

The two wins Friday moved Dixie State to 20-5 overall, 9-2 in PacWest play. In addition, DSU's 20 wins over its first 25 games marked the fastest the Trailblazers have reached the 20-win plateau in the program's four-year era.

Dixie State fell behind 3-0 after two innings in game one as the Lancers (16-9/7-4 PacWest) led off the game with three consecutive singles to plate two first-inning runs, while Ryan Williams drilled a one-out home run to left in the second frame.

The Trailblazers answered with three runs of their own one inning later to knot the score at 3-3. Trey Reineke (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill HS) led off the stanza with his second homer of the season, while Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) and Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Kapolei HS) collected RBI-hits to pull DSU even.

CBU took charge from there, outscoring Dixie State 9-0 over the next five innings as the Lancers belted three more home runs over that stretch en route to a commanding 12-3 lead.

However things turned sharply around in the top half of the eighth as DSU sent 14 batters to the plate, which resulted in nine runs and seven hits, to rally and tie the game again at 12-12. Reineke started the run parade with a bases-loaded, two-run double to right field, while Tyler Baker (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS), Logan Porter (Surprise, Ariz./Valley Vista HS), Kamachi and Jake Engel (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood HS) all collected RBI in the rally. Dixie State also plated runs on a pair of wild pitches and an errant throw on the Lancer infield.

After the DSU bullpen tossed a hitless bottom of the eighth, the Trailblazers completed the rally with two more runs in the ninth to take their first lead of the game. DSU had runners on second and third with two outs, though CBU looked as if it had gotten out of the jam when Justin Montgomery struck out Porter with a pitch in the dirt, but catcher Bryce Macy could not corral the ball, which allowed Porter to reach first base and Baker to score from third.

Dixie State then added a crucial insurance run as Engel drew the second of consecutive walks to pick up another RBI. Senior reliever Tyler Burdett (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista HS) (W, 1-1) then hurled a spotless bottom of the ninth to close out the improbable victory.

Kamachi led the Trailblazer offense with a season-high four hits and two RBI, while Reineke drove in a career-high tying three runs on a pair of hits as DSU outhit the Lancers 14-13.

Prior to Friday's comeback win, the largest deficit Dixie State had come back from in its NCAA-era was a six-run deficit done twice, the first instance coming in a 13-12 win at Division I member Utah Valley (down 12-6) on April 21, 2007, and again at home last season in a 7-6 victory over Azusa Pacific (down 6-0; 4/16/16).

In the nightcap, Miles Bice (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) staked DSU to a 1-0 second-inning lead on an RBI-single to right field to plate Tyler Mildenberg (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS), who reached on a bunt single to lead-off the frame. CBU answered one inning later as Macy drove in two with a base hit to left field, which gave the Lancers their only lead of the game at 2-1.

Dixie State then took the lead for good in the fourth with four runs, the first coming on a Reineke single to pull DSU even at 2-2. Then after a Baker walk loaded the bases, McLaughlin doubled into the gap in left center to drive two runs, while a Kamachi sacrifice fly gave the Trailblazers a commanding 5-2 lead.

CBU came back with a run in the home half of the fourth, but DSU matched it in sixth thanks to a Porter RBI-double. Meanwhile, three Trailblazer relievers combined to limit CBU to just one hit over the final 3.1 innings to wrap up the win.

McLaughlin finished with two doubles and two RBI, while Jake Davison (Taylorsville, Utah/Taylorsville HS) and Wyatt Branch (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) also collected two hits apiece, as DSU outhit CBU 11-7 in the finale. Senior righthander Jose Rosales-Rodarte (Las Vegas, Nev./Spring Valley HS) (W, 1-0) struck out two in 1.1 innings of relief to pick up his first win of the season, while Sean Hardman (Pleasant Grove, Utah/American Fork HS) (S, 1) pitched a spotless 1.1 innings with a strikeout to earn the save. Junior southpaw Matt Mosca (Las Vegas, Nev./Cimarron Memorial HS) (ND) fanned five and scattered three runs and six hits over 3.2 innings, but did not figure in the decision.

Dixie State will go for the series sweep Saturday at 12 noon (PT) at Totman Stadium.
