Dixie State Sllips Past Chaminade as Holmstead Scores 35

Box Score ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork) scored 35 points to lead the Dixie State University women's basketball to a 73-68 win over Chaminade University on Saturday evening.

Holmstead finished 13-23 from the field and 9-10 from the foul line, scoring nearly half of the DSU (12-11/10-7 PWC) points. Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) connected on three second half three pointers to finish with 11 points.

Taylor Maynes (Salome, AZ/Salome) led the Storm with 11 rebounds as the outrebounded the Silverswords (3-19/3-13 PWC) 48-27 and win the battle of the boards.

"It was a good way to and our home run with a 'W'," said head coach Catherria Turner. " Sometimes you win pretty and sometimes you just win, this was one of those games.

Trailing 62-59 with 3:36 remaining, the Storm reeled off eight straight points to take control.

The run started with Briana White's driving lay-up. On the next trip down, Holmstead drove, and the Silverswords swarmed, so she kicked it to Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) who passed to a wide-open Miranda Moore (Coolidge, AZ/Coolidge) for a jumper.

Then White got a steal at mid-court and raced in for a fast break lay-up. Holmstead followed with a pair of free throws to put Dixie up 67-62 with 1:39 left.

Chaminade pulled within three, but Dixie delivered the knockout punch when Holmstead drove baseline past two defenders, drew another two Silverswords to her, and then skiped a pass to Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, UT/Emery) for a lay-up.

DSU won its fourth straight game and pushed its over .500 for the first time this season.

"Haley came in and really hit some key shots and free throw's for us, but the key was our defense down the stretch," concluded Turner.

Lilia Maio led Chaminade with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

PacWest play continues next week as the Red Storm travel to the San Francisco Bay Area for a pair of games.
