Catherria Turner is in her second season as head coach of Dixie State women's basketball. She joined DSU in June of 2013.
Turner coached the Red Storm to a 14-14 in 2013-14, including an 11-9 mark in Pacific West Conference play.
Turner spent the two seasons prior as the head coach at fellow Pacific West Conference member Holy Names University. She led her team to ninth place finish and a 12-14 record in 2012-13, after being selected in the preseason to finish last in the conference. HNU led the NCAA and the PacWest in rebounds with 51.2 per game. Off the court, her squad had a GPA above 3.0 and spent over 300 hours per season of community service. In her two seasons as head coach, she compiled a 25-32 record.
Prior to Holy Names, Turner served as an assistant coach at University of Portland, University of Maine and Simpson College (IA), assisting with recruiting and ensuring student athletes attained academic excellence. At Simpson College, she was the diversity athletic recruiter for all 18 sports; as well, as helped guide the women’s team to an overall record of 27-3, reaching the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen. While coaching at Maine, Turner helped lead the team to a top 25 academic rating in the NCAA. While at Portland, Coach Turner helped lead the 2009-10 team to the best record since 1997-98.
Turner began her college career at the University of Oregon. In her freshman year, the Ducks won the NIT championship. The following year, she transferred to Oklahoma State University, where Turner excelled as a member of the women’s basketball team. In 2005-2006, she was among the leaders in the nation in assists and minutes played. Turner was also the team captain and a scholar athlete, being named to the Big 12’s All Academic Women’s Basketball Team.
Within Turner’s high school career, she was named the 2001 Arizona State Player of the Year; after averaging a triple double (29.7 ppg, 11 rbd, 10 stl). Turner still holds the big schools state records for points per game average, along with steals in a season and in a game. She was inducted into the Amphitheater High School (AZ) Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
Turner began her coaching career as the head coach of the Tucson Miracles travel team in 2002; in addition she assisted in coaching within several camps and organizations for youth. She is an entrepreneur, co-founding a sports gear company (Ms. Balla) and has continued to advance her knowledge in her sport completing additional coaching clinics such as Nike/WBCA So You Want to be a Coach. Turner is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and the Black Coach Administrators. Turner also competed in the Miss Black Oregon USA scholarship pageant in 2010. She was the first runner up in the event that celebrates the scholastic achievements, talents and beauty of African American women.
Turner received her Bachelor of Science in Education at Oklahoma State University in 2005 and earned her Master of Science in Management Communications at the University of Portland in 2011.
