Women Defeat Hawaii Pacific 88-84 to Sweep the Islands

Box Score HONOLULU -- Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork) scored 29 points, Brianna White (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union) added 23 and Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, UT/Emery) (12 pts/10 reb) finished with her third straight double double to help the Dixie State University women's basketball team defeat Hawaii Pacific University 88-84 today at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu.

The Red Storm won its fourth straight game and improves to 6-6 on the season and 4-2 in the Pacific West Conference and sweep the difficult Hawaiian Islands road swing.

"Whenever we can come to Hawaii and walk away with three wins, it's a great thing," said head coach Catherria Turner. "We played as a team!"

A 9-0 run by the Sea Warriors (7-4/3-2 PWC) gave them the lead at 36-31 with 3:57 left, but DSU responded with a 14-0 run to eliminate the deficit and build the lead.

The first half performances of White (10 points) and Holmstead (20 points) helped lead the Red Storm to a 43-38 advantage heading into the locker room.

In the second half, the Sea Warriors stole the lead midway thru the period, but the Storm responded and regained the lead at 60-57.

A 12-0 HPU run gave them the lead at 71-64 with 7:57 left; the run gave the Sea Warriors five players in double figures.

But the resilient Red Storm squad bounced back and followed with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 73 on a White layup with 5:07 remaining. After two missed HPU shots, Mann gave DSU a 75-73 lead.

DSU extended its lead to five points, but HPU would not go away easy when they would tie the game for the ninth time at 81 and took the lead on a pair of Loren Gurrola free-throws.

But DSU followed with a 6-0 run to secure the victory.

Turner continued, "When different players were called on they showed up and we had several key rebounds."

The Red Storm outrebounded HPU 59-38, but despite committing 28 turnovers DSU walks away with the victory.

"This truly was a team win," concluded Turner.

The Red Storm return home for a quick two game set in the Burns Arena. They welcome Azusa Pacific on Saturday and Fresno Pacific on Monday, both game tip-off at 5 p.m.
