Miller and Holmstead lead Red Storm to Turner's First Win

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado – The Dixie State University women's basketball team earned its first victory of the 2013-14 season with a 69-59 win over Western State Colorado University and the first of Catherria Turner's at the helm of the Red Storm.
 
The Red Storm (1-2) used 10-0 run midway thru the second half to separate themselves from the Mountaineers (0-4). A Brianna White (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union) and Taylor Maynes (Salome, AZ/Salome) layup's and a pair of three-pointers from Kalyah Miller gave DSU the needed shot in the arm to oust Western State. Miller scored 20 points in the second half.
 
"It's always great to get a win on the road," said Turner. "Everyone came in and gave us solid minutes."
 
WSCU didn't lay down easily as they chipped away at the lead and cut it to four points on a Jade McIntosh layup with 5:38 left in the game.
 
DSU responded by outscoring the Mountaineers 12-6 to secure the first win of the season and improve to 3-0 all-time against Western State.
 
Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork) led the Red Storm in scoring for the third straight game with 24 points and eight rebounds. She had 14 at the half as DSU clung to a narrow 31-30 lead at intermission.
 
All ten DSU players who played grabbed rebounds and nine of them scored points. The Storm shot 38.1 percent from the field and 42. 9 percent from three-point range, while committing a season low 15 turnovers in the game.
 
"We limited our turnovers, which helped, and we outrebounded them 57-38," concluded Turner. "It was an overall good team win."
 
Desiree Smith had 16 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Mountaineers in the loss.
 
Dixie State concludes play at the Holiday Inn-Airport Thanksgiving Classic tomorrow when they play the host and No. 7 ranked Colorado Mesa University at 7 p.m. from Brownson Arena.
