Holmstead's 30 Not Enough as Red Strom Lose 82-76 to CSU L.A.

Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork) scored 30 points for the Dixie State University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as the Red Storm lost to California State University, Los Angeles 82-76 in the Eagles Nest.

Holmstead finished with her first double double of the season by adding 10 rebounds to the mix. She was 14 of 15 from the free throw line and 8-23 shooting from the floor. Her and Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) each had 15 points at the half.

The Red Storm led 39-32 at the half, but were outscored 50-37 in 2nd half by the Golden Eagles (2-0). DSU built a 14 point lead but saw it evaporate to just seven as the half approached.

In the second half, a quick 7-0 run by the Golden Eagles gave them the lead at 41-39. DSU bounced right back on a 6-0 run to give DSU the  45-41 lead with 13:51 remaining in the game. The two team exchanged baskets for the next several minutes and Nanea Woods (Portland, OR/St. Mary's Academy) tied the game at 64-64 with a pair a free throws.

But, turnovers and missed baskets helped the Golden Eagles outscore DSU 18-10 to end the game. DSU 26 turnovers to CSULA's nine and oustcored the Red Storm 48-18 in the paint.

"We still need to put together two complete halves," said head coach Catherria Turner. "We showed signs of what we are capable of and we are taking steps in the right direction."

Miller finished in double figures with 20, and Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, UT/Emery) added nine rebounds. The Red Storm shot 33.3 perecent from the field.

Four Golden Eagles finished in double figures, including two with double doubles. Destine La Fountain 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Aiewokhoe Okungbowa with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

DSU travels next week to Grand Junction, CO for a pair of games with Western State on Friday and host school Colorado Mesa on Saturday.
