Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – The Dixie State College of Utah women's basketball team never held the lead Saturday afternoon. Cal State University San Bernardino defeated the ladies of Dixie State 73-69 at Coussoulis Arena in non-conference action.
Dixie dropped to 0-1 on the young season while CSU San Bernardino improved to 1-0.
CSUSB guard Krystal Urzua had 22 points to lead all scorers while three other Coyotes – forward Jaclyn Rainville (15). guard Shannon Gholar (13) and guard Morgan Pryor (10) – reached double digits in points. Urzua chipped in a team-high eight rebounds and six steals.
DSC guards Jessie Ingraham (Tuscon. AZ/Canyon Del Oro) and Deney Phommabout (West Valley CIty. UT/Hillcrest) each had 13 points off the bench while forward Tanya Clark (Beaumont. CA/Beaumont) pulled down eight rebounds.
BreAnne Haslam (Mountain Green. UT/Morgan) (3-3. 6 points) and Megan Tidwell (Poway. CA/Poway) (2-2. 4 points) both had perfect nights from the floor in good showings.
CSUSB led early 9-8 before a scoring spurt from Urzua and guard Mindy Baker. Three consecutive baskets pushed the Coyotes to their biggest 1st half lead. 18-10. Dixie cut the lead to one point twice. but never held pulled ahead. San Bernardino hit on 12 of 27 shots to outpace Dixie during the first 20 minutes. 32-27.
Ingraham paced DSC with seven points. three of six from the field. in the first half. Senior forward Jessica Carver (Layton. UT/Layton) added five points and four rebounds. The team shot 37 percent (12-27). a better total than any half in their previous three exhibition tilts.
CSUSB scored the first five points of the second half and built a 12-point cushion at the 16:09 mark with two Urzua free throws. The lead remained at 12 with 7:55 after a jumpshot from guard Jatarra Pryor.
Dixie rallied with full-court pressure leading to steals – two by forward Tanya Clark (Beaumont. CA/Beaumont) and one by guard Courtney Boyd (Keokuk. IA/Keokuk) - before cutting the lead to four with 6:37 in the game on a Shanae Vaifanua (Hurricane, UT/Hurricane) lay-up.
The Coyotes bumped the lead to nine on a Gholar lay-up. 72-63. DSC used one final push from distance – three-pointers by senior guard Lindsey Chettinger (Sergeant Bluff. IA/Sergeant Bluff) and Ingraham – to reduce CSUSB's lead to four. the eventual margin of victory.
The game featured 46 turnovers from both teams. Dixie State had 26turnovers and shot 37 percent from the floor. and led the rebound battle 45-38. CSUSB had 20 turnovers but shot 44 percent and generated 16 steals.
DSC will look to rebound Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match-up against UC San Diego. Tip from RIMAC Arena is scheduled for 1pm Pacific.
