Utah Tech posted a 13
th-place finish at the 29
th Idaho Bandon Dunes Championships, which closed out play on Tuesday at the Pacific Dunes Golf Course in Bandon, Ore.
The Trailblazers got off to a great start, opening with a 5-under 279 on Sunday to stand in a tie for third place through 18 holes. However the course played a lot tougher during Monday's second round, during which combined to fire a plus-20 304 to fall nine spots to 12
th.
Utah Tech improved by five strokes on their final loop, recording a 15-over 299 to finish with a three round team score of plus-30 882.
Oregon State (263-281-277-821; -31) led wire-to-wire to claim the team title, 17 strokes clear of runner-up Oregon (268-286-284; -14), Seattle U (280-283-285; -4) placed third overall.
Junior
Ashton McArthur paced the Trailblazers with his fourth top-15 showing of the season as he finished in a five-way tie for 13
th at minus-2 211.
McArthur fired an opening 2-under 69 in a round that featured one eagle and one birdie. Then after a 2-over 73 on Monday, the junior bounced back with another 69 in a round that included four of his 10 total birdies for the tourney.
Meanwhile, freshman
David Liechty made a little history in Sunday's opening round as he recorded only the second hole-in-one in Bandon Dunes history with an ace on the par-3 fifth hole. His ace, along with three birdies had him tied for ninth through 18 holes at 3-under 68.
However Liechty, who recorded eight total birdies and two eagles overall, fired a 4-over 75 in round two, and a final round 73 to wind up in solo 34
th at plus-3 216.
Fellow freshman
Joe Zhou fired a matching 68 in round one, thanks in part to five birdies and 12 pars on his opening loop. Zhou (seven total birdies) followed that up with a 75 and a 6-over 77 to in finish in a four-way tie for 51
st at plus-7 220.
Redshirt junior
Braden Anderson (four total birdies) opened with a 2-over 73 on Sunday, but rounds of 81 and 80 moved him to solo 93
rd place at plus-22 235.
Utah Tech will enjoy a three-week break before the Trailblazers head to University Park, Wash., to play in the Seattle U Redhawk Invitational on March 30-31. The tournament will be held at storied Chambers Bay Golf Course, which hosted the 2015 United States Open.
