Utah Tech could not overcome four costly turnovers and ill-timed penalties as the Trailblazers closed out the road portion of their 2025 schedule with a 23-0 loss at No. 24 West Georgia on Saturday afternoon at University Stadium.
Â
The Trailblazers (2-9/1-6 UAC) found themselves in a 9-0 hole after the first 30 minutes after UWG scored a touchdown on its opening possession, though the Wolves were not able to convert on the PAT attempt.Â
Â
West Georgia (8-3/5-3 UAC) later tacked on a Tommy Holden 27-yard field goal just before the halftime horn.
Â
Meanwhile Utah Tech was forced to punt on four of their six first half offensive possessions, while Blazers best scoring chance was thwarted by a fumble inside the red zone with just under 10 minutes to play in the second quarter.Â
Â
Utah Tech's defense kept the Trailblazers in the game for much of the third quarter, and managed to force the unit's first turnover of the day midway through the frame when
Jeremiah Jimoh punched the ball out of the hands of Wolves receiver Devion Newson.
Â
Jace Sweeten then recovered the loose ball at the Blazer 31, but unfortunately Utah Tech was unable to take advantage of the Wolves' miscue as the offense went three-and-out.
Â
West Georgia went to its bag of tricks on the ensuing possession when tight end Bryce Dickerson hit Wolves' running back Latrelle Murrell on the back end of an 18-yard double pass to extend to a 16-0 lead.
Â
The Wolves later pushed their lead to 23-0 in the fourth quarter with a Davin Wydner-to-Jacob Ritchie 25-yard catch-and-run on a drive that was extended by two costly Utah Tech special teams penalties on the UWG punter.
Utah Tech was held to 253 yards of total offense in the loss. Redshirt freshman quarterback
Bronson Barben threw for 141 yards on 15-for-26 passing. Redshirt freshman running back
Asa Chatman led the Blazers with 35 yards on the ground on nine carries as Utah Tech wound up with 112 rushing overall.Â
Â
On defense, senior safety
Justin Houston racked up a game-high 10 tackles with one tackle-for-loss.Â
Utah Tech's shutout loss was the program's fifth in its NCAA era overall, and the second since Trailblazers made their transition to Division-I FCS status.
Â
UWG wound up with 378 yards of offense, with Wydner throwing for 201 of those yards on 18-for-28 passing.
Â
Utah Tech will put a bow on the 2025 season, and play its final game as a member of the UAC, next Saturday afternoon when the Trailblazers welcome Eastern Kentucky to Greater Zion Stadium for "Senior Day." Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m. (MT).
