Trailblazers Fall at BYU on Tuesday Night

Utah Tech was not able to build upon an early lead as the Trailblazers dropped an 8-2 road decision at in-state foe BYU on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

The Trailblazers (9-27) pushed across two first-inning runs thanks to only one hit, which came on a lead-off Kyle McDaniel double. Hank Dodson followed with a one-out walk, while Brennen Study and Chase Rodriguez both were hit by pitches, with the Rodriguez plunking resulting in McDaniel scoring the game's first run.

Petey Soto Jr. followed with a deep fly out to right field, which allowed Dodson to score from third base to make a 2-0 game.

BYU (19-14) managed to get one of those runs back in the home first, then loaded the bases with a single, a walk and a hit batter to start the Cougar second.

The Cougars then tied the game with another walk and would take a 3-2 lead on a Luke Anderson groundout before Utah Tech turned the first of two double plays on the night to end the threat.

BYU would go on to break the game open with three runs in the fourth and tacked on two more runs in the sixth to extend to an 8-2 advantage.

Utah Tech had its chances to climb back into the game over the next two innings, but the Blazers stranded two runners on the base paths in the seventh, and hit into an inning-ending double play that stopped a scoring chance in the eighth. The Trailblazers then got two more base runners in the ninth, but came up empty.

Utah Tech was limited to just four hits on the night, with Dodson legging out a pair of doubles, while Soto Jr. singled in the Trailblazer eighth. However the Blazers were done in by nine walks and three hit Cougar batters, which led to seven of the eight BYU runs on the night.

Utah Tech returns to Western Athletic Conference play this weekend in Phoenix with a three-game road series at Grand Canyon.
