Utah Tech could not get the bats going as the Trailblazers came out on the short end of a 7-1 decision to CSUN in game two of a three-game weekend series on Saturday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.
Â
CSUN (4-2) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, and Matador hurler Ryan Halamicek (W, 1-1) made that early run support stand as he limited the Trailblazers to only one hit over his first four innings of work.
Â
Utah Tech finally cracked the scoreboard, almost literally, in the fifth when freshman shortstop
Petey Soto Jr. ambushed a 1-1 Halamicek offering and drove it high off the scoreboard in left center field. The lead-off solo blast was his first collegiate home run and made it a 4-1 game.
Â
Trailing 5-1 in the sixth, Utah Tech loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a
Hank Dodson single to bring up the potential tying run with two outs, but CSUN reliever Blake Ignaciak managed to retire Soto Jr. to end the threat.
Â
The Trailblazers were then held to just one hit and three total base runners over their final three offensive frames.
Â
Utah Tech managed only four hits on the day, with Dodson accounting for two of those safeties. Meanwhile, senior outfielder
Jack Walker, who was seeing his first action of the season, laced a pinch-hit double left center on the first pitch he saw to lead off the home eighth.
Â
Junior lefthander
Carston Herman (L, 0-1) pitched into the fifth, striking out one and scattering three earned runs in a losing effort. Â
Â
Utah Tech will look to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday beginning at 12 noon (MT). Â
