Late CSUN Rallies Dooms Trailblazer Baseball on Sunday

Utah Tech saw a two-run ninth inning lead slip away as the Trailblazers dropped the final game of their three-game weekend series to CSUN, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.

The Blazers (1-7) led 4-1 through five innings complete, thanks to some clutch two-out hitting in the early going.

Utah Tech took its first lead in the series in the home first when Ethan Royal laced an opposite field double down the first base line, was balked to third, and driven in on a Hank Dodson deep fly out to center field.

Then with the game tied at 1-1 in the third, the Trailblazers strung together four-straight two out singles, including a Dodson run-scoring safety, and a two-run Aaron Perez base knock that staked Utah Tech to a three-run cushion.

Junior righthander Ky Decker (ND) made that lead stand as he struck out four and held CSUN (5-2) to just one run and two hits over five solid innings.

Utah Tech looked like it was in good shape to avoid a series sweep in the sixth when with one out in the frame, outfielder Jack Walker launched a towering home run over the wall in left center to extend the Blazer lead to 5-1.

The Matadors clapped back with two runs in the seventh on a two-run Kamau Neighbors bloop single to center, and managed to bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate with two outs in the stanza.

However Blazer reliever Matt Nelson was able to induce a Ben Griffin flyout to send the game to the stretch.

With two outs in the top of the ninth and nursing a 5-3 lead, Utah Tech saw the Matadors turn the tables with a rally of their own. Neighbors laced an 0-1 pitch to center to bring up Conner Stewart, who tied the game with a homer to left field.

CSUN followed that up with two more hits, the latter of which was misplayed in the outfield, to allow pinch runner Smith Chandler to score all the way from first base carrying the eventual game-winning run.

The Matadors then Utah Tech in order in the ninth to complete the series sweep and hand the Trailblazers their fifth-straight loss.

Nine different Trailblazers collected at least one base hit as Utah Tech outhit CSUN 10-8, with Walker leading the way with two safeties including his first homer of the year.

Utah Tech will close out its homestand on Tuesday afternoon with a midweek match-up vs. UNLV. First pitch at Bruce Hurst Field is slated for 4:05 p.m.
