Utah Tech finished in the middle of the pack in fifth place as the host of the Second Annual Trailblazer Invitational, which was played on Sunday-through-Tuesday at Green Spring Golf Course in Washington.
After opening with a 28-over par 316 on Sunday to stand in sixth place, the Trailblazers came back with a 15-over 303 in round two on Monday to move up one spot to fifth. However the Blazers could not make up any ground on the teams ahead of them as they posted a 24-over 312 on their final loop on Tuesday to finish with a team total of plus-67 931.
Fellow WAC member Utah Valley (304-294-305) vaulted from third place to first on day two and held off a late charge by runner-up CSUN (299-307-304-910; +46) to win the team title by seven strokes at plus-39 903.
Two Trailblazers finished in the top-20 on the player leaderboard, led by sophomore
Brooke Gelinas, who managed to bookend a pair of 2-over 74s around second round 8-over 80 to finish in solo 11
th-place overall at plus-12 228. Gelinas led the 55-player field in par-3 scoring (2.75) and finished t-15
th in total birdies with six.
Meanwhile, freshman
Mia Cesarek rebounded from an opening 11-over 83 with Utah Tech's low round of the event, a 1-over 73 in round two, then finished with a six-over 78 on Tuesday to join two others tied for 19
th at plus-18 234.
Fellow freshman
Samantha Phelan (78-77-82) wound up tied for 27
th at plus-21 237, followed by sophomores
Jenna Anderson (81-77-80-238; +22) and
Jane Olson (84-76-80-240; +24) in t-30
th and 33
rd, respectively.
In addition, sophomore
Corinne Lillywhite (77-79-79) tied for 22
nd at plus-19 235 playing as an individual, and led the entire field in made birdies with 11.
Utah Tech will return to action on the weekend of Feb. 23-25, when the Blazers head to Rio Verde, Ariz., to play in the Western Michigan-hosted Rio Verde Invitational.
