Utah Tech head women's basketball coach
JD Gustin announced on Wednesday the signing of Texas prep standout Kastyn Young to a National Letter of Intent to join the Trailblazer program ahead of the upcoming 2023-24 season.
Â
"Kastyn's a dynamic scoring guard that has great size and athleticism," Coach Gustin said. "She loves to compete, is a great teammate, and knows how to win. She's a terrific fit for our program and we're thrilled she chose Utah Tech."
Â
Young (5-11; Mico, Texas) is a two-time Texas 29-6A first team all-district selection who averaged 10.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals this past season to help lead Harlan High School in San Antonio to a 29-5 overall record, which included 14-2 Region IV District 29 mark.Â
Â
The freshman-to-be scored in double figures 19 times with three 20-plus point outings, highlighted by a season-high 23 points with seven 3-pointers in a win over Jones HS (55-28) back in early November. Young hit at least one 3-pointer in 31 of 34 games played during her senior campaign. Â
Â
Young, who played for the San Antonio Hoops Elite club team, also earned first team all-district honors as a junior after she averaged 13.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.Â
Â
Young joins a Trailblazer program that concluded its third season of NCAA Division I play with a 19-12 overall record, which included a fifth-place finish in the Western Athletic Conference standings (10-8), and a first round victory at the 2023 WAC tournament.Â
Â
Utah Tech's 19 wins this past season were the most in the program's current NCAA Division-I transition, and is the highest win total during Coach Gustin's seven-year tenure on the Trailblazer bench.
