The Trailblazers competed at the first day of the WAC indoor track and field championships with entries in 8 different events ranging from the 60 meters up to 5,000 and an entry in the distance medley relay. The day saw three team records fall along with personal records and new entries into the team's top ten list in nearly every event!
ON THE TRACK: The first event of the day was the one-mile prelims. The Blazers had two entries;
Lexi Larsen ran a lifetime best of 5:12.73 less than a tenth of a second of the program record. In the second heat running a personal record of her own was
Mariah Skinner in 5:23.35 giving her sixth on the team all-time list.
The met continued with the two shortest events of the day at 60 meters, first with the hurdles then the 60 flat. In the hurdles,
Ashlyn Parish came across the line sixth best in program history at 9.09 followed by
Megan Jenkins in a personal best time of 9.09 that landed her seventh on the team's top performance list. In the flat version of the 60
Mary Fallon tied her personal best performance in 8.01,
Alaynah Reed crossed in 8.07, and
Ashlyn Parish clocked in at 8.20.
Distances went from the straight in the middle of the stadium back to the oval with the 400-meter where the Trailblazers saw the first team record of the day in a close battle.
Megan Jenkins ran a time of 59.78 to set the leading mark in program history.
Kelly Denninghoff clicked off a nearly identical 59.78 finishing just 6
th thousandths of a second behind Jenkins. The two-lap crew was rounded out by
Alaynah Reed at 1:01.06.
The next event on the track was the 800 meters race.
Addi Wyatt led the way in a team record time of 2:14.42 good for eight in the prelims and making her the first Utah Tech runner to qualify for the finals on Saturday. She was followed by
Sadie Edwards who ran a personal record time of 2:20.72 and a third personal record performance at 2:22.68 for
Camilla Hamilton.
The final prelim of the day was the 200 meters sprint. And it was the biggest field of the day for the Trailblazers with four athletes competing.
Ashlyn Parish ran her third and final event of the meet in the eighth fastest mark in team history at 26.59 and a PR.
Alaynah Reed was just behind for the ninth spot on the all-time list of 26.61 in her third event of the day. distance
Mary Fallon ran a time of 26.64 and
Kelly Denninghoff ran a personal best of 26.77.
It was then onto the first final of the day for Utah Tech with
Kirstin Williams and
Shakayla Morgan competing in the 5,000 meter run. Williams ran a personal best and team record of 18:17.08 to lead the way with Morgan close behind running in 18:19.36, a new personal best for her as well running the second-best time in program history.
The day closed out with one final record. The DMR team of
Mariah Skinner on running 1200 meters,
Camilla Hamilton in the 800 meters,
Sadie Edwards doing the 400 meters, and
Lexi Larsen closed the race with 1600 meters for a total time of 12:29.69.
BACK IN ACTION TOMORROW: The Trailblazers will return to The Podium tomorrow for the second and final day of the WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. They will have eight individuals and one relay team competing across four events. The day will open with the Blazers lone field event entries of
Kylie Bishop,
Morgan Callens, and
Lainee Leavitt in the high jump.
Addi Wyatt will be the first on the track in the 800 meters final.
Kirstin Williams,
Lexi Larsen,
Shakayla Morgan, and
Mariah Skinner will run the 3'000 meters. Then the competition will close with the 4X400 meter relay.
