Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

WSOC starts season off in competitive 2-1 loss to Colorado State

Utah Tech women's soccer started the 2022 season with a competitive 2-1 loss to Colorado State Thursday evening.

What Head Coach Molly Rouse said: "There are some very exciting things happening right now. We are very organized defensively. We have a lot of experience in our back line and in our midfield. We created a lot of chances in our attacking third today and just like in previous seasons it's going to come down to if we can execute in those offensive situations and get the ball in the back of the net."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Utah Tech started off with a strong attack and drew a corner kick in the eighth minute. McKinley Barney set the ball in the corner and sent it in where Lauren Buxton got a head on it, sending it deep into the upper 90.

Buxton's goal put the Trailblazers up 1-0 early. UT didn't get to celebrate long as Colorado State answered with a goal just two minutes later.

The rest of the half was end to end play and as the first 45 concluded the score remained tied at 1-1.

In the 51st minute the game was set on a lightning delay. Play resumed after the required wait time and with the score still at 1-1 the action intensified.

The Rams found themselves with control in the 18 on the attack. In the 85th minute, CSU was able to get a second goal to take the 2-1 lead.

Utah Tech amped up the intensity and were able to keep the ball in the attacking third those final five minutes but weren't able to execute to keep the game alive and ended up falling 2-1.

STAT BREAKDOWN:  The Trailblazers were led by Lauren Buxton who had UT's lone goal. Ella Carmody, Gracie Knutzen, Emily Garbett, Abigail Allard and Lacy Fox all were able to get shots on frame.  Madison Monson had the game high of two shots.

UT ended the game with eight shots and five on frame with one goal and one assist.

Thompson started in the net for Utah Tech and played the full 90 minutes. She recorded four saves.

Colorado State ended the game with eight shots, six on frame, two goals and two assists. The Rams ended the game with just four saves.

NOTES TO KNOW: Utah Tech now has a 0-1-0 record overall on the season.

UP NEXT: Utah Tech hits the road to take on Northern Arizona Sunday, August 21 before heading to Minnesota to take on North Dakota State and St. Thomas. The next home game of the season will be Sept. 4 against South Dakota which starts a five game home stretch.
