Dixie State closed the home portion of its 2022 WAC slated by dropping the final game of its weekend series to Seattle U, 14-9, on Senior Day Saturday at Bruce Hurst Field. With the loss, DSU's season record fell to 18-28 overall, 12-15 in conference play.
Â
The Trailblazers led 5-3 after three complete, rallying from an early 2-0 deficit with a single run in the home first, and two more tallies in each of the next two frames.
Â
After Seattle U (15-26/10-14 WAC) struck for two first-inning runs, the Blazers took advantage of a two-out Redhawk error to score their first run, then took a 3-2 lead in the second when DSU cashed in a hit batter and an
Ethan He double with a balk and a one-out suicide squeeze bunt laid down by
Jagun Leavitt.
Â
With the game tied at 3-3 heading after a Redhawk run in the top of the third,
Zach Thomas and
Kaden Hollow opened the DSU half of the frame with consecutive base hits.
Tyson Fisher then a lined double to left field to chase home Thomas, while
Tyler Hollow drove in his younger brother with a flyout to left.
Â
Seattle U reclaimed the lead at 6-5 with three runs in the fifth, then after
Chase Rodriguez tied the game with an RBI-infield single in the DSU fifth, the Redhawks jumped back in front on a Connor O'Brien lead off homer in the seventh.
Â
Dixie State had a chance to again tie or retake the lead in the eighth with runners at the corners and only one out. However Seattle U managed to escape the jam with the lead intact as reliever Alex Jemal (W, 1-1) came on to retire the next two Blazer hitters in order.
Â
That missed opportunity proved costly for Dixie State as the Redhawks blew the game open with seven runs in the ninth to extend to a commanding 14-6 lead.
Â
The Trailblazers managed to mount a late charge with three two-outs runs, but the deficit proved to be too much as Seattle U recorded the final out to clinch the series win.
Â
DSU finished with 13 hits on the day, with eight of the nine starters in the lineup, and 12 different Trailblazers overall, collecting at least one hit.
Â
Tyler Hollow led the Blazers with two hits, including a ninth-inning opposite field solo home run, which was his 197
th career base hit, leaving him three safeties shy of becoming just the third player in DSU's NCAA era to reach the 200-hit plateau with nine games remaining in his collegiate career.
Â
Dixie State wraps up the in-state portion of its schedule with a road date at BYU this Tuesday in Provo starting at 5 p.m. The Trailblazers will then quickly return to Bruce Hurst Field for their 2022 home finale vs. Utah on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
