Dixie State pounded out 17 hits and got a strong pitching performance from sophomore
Ryan Hardman, as the Trailblazers salvaged the final game of their three-game WAC series vs. Sacramento State with a 12-2 victory in seven innings on Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field. With the win, the Trailblazers improved to 16-22 overall, 10-11 in WAC play.
After being held to just eight total runs and 13 hits, while surrendering five Hornet home runs, in the first two games of the series, DSU homered three times in five innings on Sunday en route a commanding 4-1 lead.
Blazer lead-off hitter
Shane Taylor got the hit parade going with two outs in the third with a solo shot over the right field wall to put DSU on the board. It was the sophomore's fifth homer of the season, which pulled him into a tie for the team lead.
Sacramento State (20-19/11-10 WAC) came back to knot the score at 1-1 with a run in the fourth, but
Tyson Fisher gave his side the lead right back with a towering solo blast over the left field wall with one out in the home fourth.
DSU struck for two more runs in the fifth, which got off to a loud start when
Mathew Ivancich took the first pitch he saw from Hornet starter Colin Hunter (L, 2-4) over the batter's eye in centerfield. The Blazers followed that up with three more hits, including a
Parker Schmidt RBI-single later in the frame.
Sac State managed to get one of those runs back in the sixth to trim the Blazer lead to 4-2. However DSU answered with three runs in the sixth and plated five more in the seventh to salt away the run-rule win.
While the Blazer offense was pounding away on the Hornet pitching staff, Hardman (W, 3-1) was dealing early, retiring nine of the first 11 Hornet batters he faced. The sophomore finished with four strikeouts and scattered two runs and five hits on his way to his first career complete game victory, which was also the DSU staff's first of the season.
DSU's infield also did the job behind Hardman as the unit turned two inning-ending double plays in the fifth and seventh frames.
Every Trailblazer in the line-up had at least one hit, with Taylor tying a career-high with four hits to go with two RBI and a run scored. Meanwhile Ivancich went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs, and Schmidt, Fisher and
Jack Walker finished with two hits apiece.
Of DSU's 17 total hits, eight went for extra bases, including a season-high five doubles, while the Trailblazers' three home runs on Sunday tied a season high (3 at Utah Valley – 4/16).
Dixie State will now hit the road for four-straight games, beginning with a midweek date at in-state rival Utah on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 4:05 p.m. at Smith's Ballpark in Salt Lake City.
